The author of Frieren is very blunt with the usage of German words as character names in the manga, and is especially blunt in this arc. "Lügner" is quite literally the German word for "liar".

Finally someone who understands that Frieren lives at the same speed than humans ! Most reactors think ten years are like seconds for her... But a year has the same number of days for elves and humans. And you understand the "demon problem" right away too :) A note about the demon girl : she wanted to live in peace. She tried. But she didn't understand why humans would be attached to family - or find eating a little girl alive detestable. She tried - but was destined to fail because she thinks very differently. For humans, her "peace gestures" where horrible crimes... And it would be same the other way around. A translation problem - that I've seen with all translations : Frieren does not say that elves have no romantic or procreative instincts at all. Just that those instincts are far less developed than with humans. it goes with their life span : they live so long that if they had children as often than humans, their population would not be sustainable. Of course the demons look cute or handsome. Humans are vulnerable to people looking like that. So some demons evolved to look like perfect husbandos/waifus. Others hunt differently - like Qual - so being seductive is not an advantage for them. Next episodes will be a fun watch :) Pause an comment as much as you want - Frieren is a show that only reveals itself if you take the time to wonder about what is said or shown.

It's awesome to think that demons have different hunting styles and that is reflected in their appearance as well. Also, elves procreating as much as humans when they have such a long lifespans does sound like a recipe for disaster 🤣 It makes so much sense! 🤯 Really enjoying the world building of this show! 😘👌 And thank you so much! Like you think I'm gonna sit over here and be fine and break bread with someone who ATE my child (or in my case, my cat) and giving them special treatment afterwards? Nah man. I think on your discussion about Frierens perception of time, maybe it's like a halfway point between the usual omnipotent types and the average lifespanned being. Frieren was originally shown to be aloof and feeling time passing as trivial like her 10 year adventure. But we are also shown from flashbacks here and maybe also later in the show that she does have the ability to comprehend the moment. What I observed was it's most likely the case of Frieren just not appreciating the little moments as much back then. This has slowly been ammended since Himmels death and meeting Fern as she learns new things about others and herself. But also, in regards to Frieren and also some other characters in this show, there always seems to be a sense of contradiction and duality. Frieren is both wise and naive, cold yet caring, appreciative yet dismissive. Same dichotomies are seen in Fern and Stark and etc. So it could also be a quirk of their personalities. Or just all of the above.

The flashback to the demon child in the village really is haunting. I fully believe the demon's goal was just to survive. The two main tools that demons have for survival are killing and lying, but this demon was put into a highly unusual situation where neither of those would help, so it had to come up with something new. And it seems like it genuinely tried to come up with a solution that would make the townsfolk stop wanting to kill it. But just as humans can't understand the alien thinking of demons, this demon didn't understand humans well enough, so its attempt at making peace backfired. The wild thing is that this is the story that Frieren told to demonstrate her point that demons are liars, but as far as I can tell, the demon in the flashback wasn't lying about trying to make peace. Sure, it was 100% motivated by survival rather than any human concepts of remorse, compassion, or respect for the townsfolk, so you could argue that makes it deceptive. But ultimately, that demon wasn't lying when it said it wanted to provide a replacement daughter to the bereaved mother so she would stop hating it. As far as I can tell, that was literally the demon's plan, and if the demon could understand humans better, it might have even come up with a better plan that was actually acceptable to the townsfolk. But even if it was successful, would it just have simply bided its time until it was strong enough to escape or kill the townsfolk? It still wouldn't have any emotional attachment to beings it sees as food. It all suggests that demons, as thinking beings, could theoretically get along peacefully with humans if they were put in a situation where they judged that getting along was in their best interest, and if they were properly informed on how humans think. And yet, it's hard to imagine such a situation remaining stable for very long. So despite the theoretical potential for peaceful coexistence, in practice, conflict between demons and humans seems unavoidable, which is tragic.

The nature of demons is revealed in this arc, and explored further in an arc that probably will be covered late season 2 or season 3. As it stands, demons are very effective at manipulation, because even being told upfront by Frieren, and even Lügner himself, we still doubt. Language is so intrinsic to humanity, we can't help but anthropomorphize demons.

"The first sci-fi to do aliens right" will be my new way of introducing Frieren to people 😂. The truth is this might not even be wrong. Imagine Frieren world was real in another dimension. Does it makes magic a new science field altogether with its own set of formulas and rules? If we assume that magic in Frieren has its own set of rules, formulas, etc. and that might make it a science in their world, and if we assume that Frieren is a fiction, it really is a sci-fi. Also what is the big difference between aliens and demons/dwarves/elves/monsters and more, apart that the second group exist in a world where magic exist, but it is now not even relevant since we established just before that magic in Frieren is science in disguise?

It's okay to miss stuff guys. But yes I prefer if you'd just pause if the discussion is more than a few words, this ep's reaction's pacing is good for me though! Regarding the mimics, I think it's already hinted at Ep 6 during the flashback where Heiter and Frieren are ecstatic about a spell for making shaved ice. When Frieren says that she has no spell for producing syrup, the screen shows a shot of an empty chest hinting that the grimoire for the said ice spell came from there. The gag of Frieren falling for mimics could be taken as an extension to the earlier reveal that Frieren likes collecting quirky spells (and thus takes the risk of opening all chests including suspicious ones lol) because she has good memories of making her friends happy with these.

So much to cover... First: Great job getting through this episode. I'm going to cover a few things: 1. Why are Demons monsters? 2. Demons and Human Psychology (Survival vs Empathy) 3. Demons and other species 4. Resurgence of demonic activity 1. Why are Demons considered monsters? Demons are monsters not just because they eat humans, but because they are fundamentally psychotic. They do not possess the ability of empathy. They do not form emotional attachments. That's why everything to them is either food/threat or... well, NOTHING. Even for humans, serial killers are psychotic. They do not see people as people, they treat people like objects they are typically emotionless, and do not feel guilt or remorse, and we call those humans also monsters. They have no concept of community or compassion or relationships (emotional attachment.) Our personal response of "but what if" regarding demons is not a sign of weakness, but just the fact that humans fundamentally crave community and are typically willing to give the benefit of the doubt, even when they shouldn't. 2. Demons and Human Psychology. Demons are smart enough to detect a threat, so they will either appease the threat or kill it. In the case of the demon child, she ate the child in order to sate her appetite, and she killed the chief in order to eliminate the "ownership" of the chief's daughter, in order to appease the parents of the dead child. Sympathy, empathy, compassion, these are all foreign concepts to demons,which is further elaborated on in Episode 10. Anyway, the demon child was supposed to illustrate that humans can't stop wanting to humanize and empathize with a specie that will stop at nothing to either kill/eat or appease humans. To a demon, it's not lying or deceiving, it's achieving a goal. For instance, to hack into a very secure installation, a hacker will employ "soft" infiltration tactics, meaning the manipulate human psychology to achieve their objective. It's the same with demons. 3. Demons vs Other Species (Elveds/Dwarves). This isn't really a spoiler, and it isn't stated explicitly in the manga as of yet, but the demons genocided Elves and Dwarves on the orders of the Demon King, who foresaw that these two extremely talented species could and would stand against the survival of demon kind. We learn more about this in Episode 10, and what Eisen said about his own village. These were targeted extermination attacks. 4. Why did is tehre a resurgence of demonic activity? You already hit that nail on the head - it's because Himmel died. They were afraid of Himmel, but since his death, they've been actively gaining power, which figures greatly in the arc after what's known as the Demon Infiltration Arc (the one you're in now).

I am Japanese, that English translation subtitle is wrong in places. Fern does not call him "Master". She calls him "Stark sama" and sama means about "Mr.". "Master" is a completely wrong translation.
@thomasboyles9773
@thomasboyles9773 8 ай бұрын
Master is also an old fashioned way of addressing men respectfully. It is not technically wrong, and may be a more correct translation based on the setting. It is commonly used when great grandparent aged people write letters to men. Fern learning manners from Heiter makes this fitting to me.
@CuddlinginCarnage
@CuddlinginCarnage 8 ай бұрын
Yeah honorifics are a pretty contentious part of translation. I'm a native English speaker and only have a rudimentary understanding of Japanese, but I can try to speak on behalf of what honorifics **feel** like in English. "San" is usually translated as "Mr.", since it implies a small level of formality, at least a little bit above no honorific at all. From there, "Sama" is more respectful, so it's usually translated as "Master", since that's the easiest higher level of respect for an American English speaker to understand. One might translate "Stark-sama" as "Sir Stark", but that's not something that people say in modern English. Translating it as "Mr. Stark" makes sense on paper, but then we have a new problem: how do we translate 'Stark-san"? There's nothing in English between "Mr. Stark" and "Stark". So we're sort of stuck. The usual English translation for honorifics goes: Stark -> Stark Stark-san -> Mr. Stark Stark-sama -> Master Stark You're right when you say that "Master Stark" is a weird translation, but it's kind of the best system we've settled on over the years. There's definitely a lot of other ways to translate honorifics, so it's pretty messy.

Wow you are the first person who touch upon the biological moral difference and the implication on Human-Demon relations. Most reactors just thought this means they are "Pure Evil™". but in actuality, demons being very powerful and like eating human was just the cause of animosity between the two species; it's the the fundamental biological difference between the two species resulting in a complete different moral groundwork and paradigm that result in continuous hostility. You will love the big demon arc that explore more of this concept but sadly it will probably be in season 3 orso.

Pausing, talking, and rewinding is fine… I’d rather you not miss some details. That being said, sometimes it’s not good to pause as it might break up a mood or impactful scene the show is setting up. Regarding how we may only see the demons from a human perspective, you already saw from this episode that they do focus on Lugnar and his talk with his subordinates and we do get to see their perspective. Granted, it’s not as deep as our (human) side, we still get to see what they are truly thinking.

I've followed a half-dozen different reactors to Frieren (and sampled and dropped double that) - the most enjoyable ones for me are the ones where the reactors are able to understand what's happening in the episode correctly, and also really express themselves to the episodes, crying, swearing, being amazed or upset. If not pausing results in missing what is being said, you should pause, no viewers I'd care about should be watching the episodes for the first time in a reaction video IMO. It feels most natural to me to pause when the reaction is more than a sentence and would cause the next few lines of dialog to be missed, but I think it's better to keep very long reactions of a few minutes or more to the end to not disrupt the flow that much. There's also something to be said for not pausing every 10 seconds and letting some scenes play out fully so you can be more expressive in your reactions, where breaking up the scene too much may lessen the impact of it.

I actually do really enjoy Cuddling in Carnage here a lot, but if I had to throw another one out there for you, I'd give it to storieswithstyle - what that reactor brings to the table is their German ancestry - all the names/towns in Frieren (well almost all) are German and are designed around the German definition of the word, so being native in German he provides more knowledge about that than most streams. I don´t understand the concept of the "reacters"... they pause, they mute... they mute and pause even the opening and in this 53 minutes upload they are talking 53 minutes. The English subtitles of the series are weak but it´s impossible to watch another version concurrently because all the pauses and the unknown speeding of the video. The best way would to mark the scenes instead of interrupting, the most questions get answered a few minutes later and the rest they could discuss at the end.

It's oke to pause when you talk about the point in the scene

This story is basically based on Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings. Humans basically live like we do, at most a hundred years or so. Dwarves for around 300 years, but elves are immortals. They are born and grow to full adulthood like a human in 20-30 years then just stop aging at all. The elves don't die of old age, they just keep living unless they are killed by physical damage to their bodies. They don't reproduce much because they are immortals. In Tolkien for instance, Arwin was 3000 years old when she and Aragorn got married at the end of Lord Of The Rings. So like humans, Elves have children, but they only have a child every so often. Maybe as few as one every 2 to 3 thousand years.

Right, because Tolkien exclusively created the fantasy genre.

@@lalalarose8197 I mean, yeah, he basically codified it. 99% of fantasy since his work was directly influenced by his work.

That's so interesting, thank you! I had a basic idea of Tolkien's fantasy creatures because his stories were unbelievably influential, but I didn't know the more specific details. 300 years for dwarves is still a long time compared to humans, but based on how Frieren and the others were talking, I thought Eisen would live a lot longer. This is what I get for not watching Lord of the Rings with my dad when I was little. I just don't think I was ready for a 3 hour and 30 minute long movie when I was 6 yrs old 😅

2 or 3 pauses is ok, any more and it's a bit annoying imo. Rewinding is automatically annoying to me because I watch anime alone and fully focus. But if you're watching with other people it makes sense I guess.

Completely understand where you're coming from. I used to find it a little annoying when reaction channels missed details, but now that I'm doing it myself and have a camera in front of me as well as a friend to talk to, I realized how much easier it is to get distracted than when you're just watching a show by yourself 😅 We'll try our best to find a good balance! And we're always open to suggestions ☺️
