The Ancient One told him that he was too early, meaning that Dr Strange wouldn't have even been in that car crash/phone call that told him about the "airforce colonal".

If you really think about it, Peter (Spiderman) was actually a hero before Doctor Strange. In the car the conversation was about Rhodey and his paralysis which was during Civil war, in which Spiderman was already a friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Meaning that Peter is technically a hero before Strange but Strange had more experience since Peter was in the neighborhood while Strange was protecting reality.
