Finally got a chance to answer this. This thing has a base TDP of 65W with the boost that they applied in the BIOS. At that level, you will have no problems reaching the max GPU clock and you will have close to full CPU clocks. If you stay with that TDP, the device will almost be silent. You start getting diminishing returns with this processor over 35W, but it's not an issue on a mini PC. I would do a 5 or 10W boost over the 65W as long as the fan noise doesn't bother you (it will go from dead quiet to making some noise). I would also overclock the GPU to at least 2.9GHz, especially for emulation. The tool that I used to do this is an internal engineering tool from AMD, but you can do the same things with some open source tools that exist. You're going to want to use something like Universal x86 Tuning Utility, but Handheld Control Panel from Project SBC has other useful features. These have a GUI and will be easy for you to see how to adjust what I am talking about. I've linked them below. Outside of that, there's no tuning that you'll need to do. The stock settings were great on this and the lower TDP benchmarks lined up exactly with other processors from this series. I feel like now that we have the ROG Ally at 599.99 these kind of devices will be a bit harder for me to buy for just emulation/light gaming. That said for only $180 more you get more iO, the ability to use an EGPU, Double the ram and double the HDD space. These days I can't live without 32GB of ram. That said I'll probably either get the Ally or wait for the Beelink SER those are usually cheaper and go on sale often.

A comparison between 7940HS, 7840HS & 7840U would be nice, as they only differ in Clocks, Power Consumption and Price range.

From what I can see, 7840HS and 7840U are the same chip, but CPU performance is better on this at very high TDP (even when 7840U is at the same TDP). You can almost turn a 7840HS into a 7940 by overclocking the GPU like I did here, but you can't do that for the CPU.

The Zen 4 Dragon Range Hx parts like the 7945Hx can easily be undervolted by AATU, pity that the Phoenix Apu's seemingly can't be undervolted at the moment..

@@TakiUdon I was shown screenshots on Reddit of UXTU working to undervolt the 7940Hs on the Asus Rog G14. So there is a chance that works for the Gtr7 and other devices with the Phoenix HS processors. I don't know if any of the U processors like the 7840u (or the Z1 Extreme) can be Undervolted though.

The lack of customization means the price is a tad too high imho. In the EU you are encroaching on gaming laptop prices which will perform a lot better. A version with 16GB of Ram and maybe 512GB and no OS would be better as the pricencould be dropped by 200 euros or so paying about 600 euros total.

PCSX2/Dolphin 's TDP usage seems very high, is that because you fixed the gpu clock? And what is the closest dedicated gpu this can be compared with in real gaming usage due to the bandwidth deficit compared with a dGPU? a RX6400? Or a Geforce 1050ti? Saw a 5800h+RX6400 SFF PC on Taobao for a cheaper price than this new Beelink mini pc while still being relatively small size, wonder if that will give better performance than this.

It's because of the OC. Without taking drivers into consideration and the improvements to RDNA 3, I think 1050ti is reasonable. It should still beat this in some games, but it's close. I hope Ryzen 8000 can surpass a GTX 1060 because that would be nuts.

The IGPU in this chip is severely bandwidth limited. Even if LPDDR5 8500 MT/s was used it would still be pretty bandwidth limited. I wonder if AMD will address this in future top end APUs? If Strix Point(codename for Pheonix' successor) doesn't use a 256bit memory controller then IMO it doesn't make sense to make the IGPU stronger. Cache could help but it is a bandaid solution imo. RTX 4000 series gpus showed that when textures exceed cache size in some games and spills out into a bandwidth limited memory bus performance is reduced.

Ya, this loses in synth benchmarks to LPDDR5 by 100-200 points in Time Spy. It evens out when you are over 50W. We will know soon enough because Strix should hit engineering prototypes by the end of the year.

I've got my 4090 desktop, but I keep a miniPC with 25000 emulated games (Smash Brawl etc) under the TV. I have another cheap box for party games like Jackbox and Towerfall when friends come over, or for easy carry to their house to hook to TV. Different boxes for different purposes. I have a 3rd miniPC with an n100 I got for around $160 that's running 3 game servers at the same time for me and my family (+friends, port forwarded). Takes up almost no space on the router shelf.
