British noblemen wore powdered wigs because they were trying to conceal the fact that they all had decaying scalps from syphilis. The powder they used to attempt to treat the scalp disease dyed the wigs bleach-white, and the nobility simply passed it off as a trend; it then became fashionable to wear white-powder wigs at formal events. Which is to say that the British were fond of white anime hair long before the Japanese were.

IIRC - Shaved head came as sign of loyalty. Due to border wars, mixed marriages of warriors with ainu tribes ( who were most bearded ethnicity in the world) facial hair became sign of a warrior, sign of desire for wars and rebellious spirit. So in "peaceful" era of shogunate wearing facial hair could be seen as a sign of a desire for rebellion. So most samurai preferred to shave their face as sign of loyalty. But in japanese language facial hair are called "hige". Like all facial hair, even those hair that grow on the front of the head, despite not being beard or moustache.

I gotta be completely honest, having a character creator for a Ronin in the Edo period be anything other than Japanese feels wrong to me. Like yeah, Yasuke, I get it. But just let Asians have the spotlight in their own country's history. If there was a game about being a Zulu warrior y'all think they'd let you make them Asian?
@JJA80205 ай бұрын
I can think of at least five games set in a historical Japanese setting starring Japanese characters. Can you give me even one game set in Africa, starring an African main character. The only one I can think of is AC:Origins. Plus this game was made by a Japanese studio, so it was a Japanese creative's decision to allow players to create non Asian characters.
@GoldLight735 ай бұрын
Reminds me of an article I read recently about the “mythic past,” where a lot of modern shows and games are having tons of ethnicities commonly showing up in eras where they don’t really fit. I’m all for inclusivity, but it IS a little weird just casually having two black samurai in San age where Japan was JUST forced out of isolationism.
@DigitalDevil13th5 ай бұрын
I get your point... but to be fair, if the game give players freedom of character creations to the point of they didn't look like human at all it doesn't really matter tbh.

@@JJA8020 "there are no games set in Africa" So instead of making some we should just shove black people into other people's history, even if it doesn't make sense, because otherwise they'll never get represented? What's stopping devs from making games set in Africa? Why are they so prejudiced? If I made a game about Native American history before colonization, you wouldn't mind if the Native American protagonist could be made to be African?
@JJA80205 ай бұрын
Japan has a pretty strong media industry from tv to movies to video games. Japanese people aren't wanting for Japanese stories told by Japanese creators. The Warring States Period in particular is practically a whole genre of media from TV to movies to video games created by and starring Japanese people. There is no comparison between Japan and any African country and certainly not Native Americans. It's a disingenuous comparison you're making so that you could, what, complain that two black dudes could play as black characters in this Samurai game? Again this game was created by a Japanese studio, they're the ones who made the character creator expansive enough to make characters ethnicities. It isn't even the first time they did this, they did the same thing with Nioh 2. You're taking offense on behalf of people who made the decision themselves to prioritize diversity over historical accuracy. It's a bit sus to be honest.
