Күн бұрын

Today at Ugly Truck, we're tearing into the GM 10 bolt differential on this 6.0 LS swapped 86 C10. This truck's rear gear ratio was 2.73, but we're installing a new 3.08 ring and pinion, plus a ‪@yukongearandaxle‬ Dura Grip positraction limited slip differential. We press on all new bearings and seals, set pinion depth and bearing preload, and check backlash. With everything back together, our contact pattern on the ring gear looks perfect!

Quick suggestion, I take the old bearings as long as they are still intact and don't show much wear and I run a hone through the inner races so they are a slip fit. Then when measuring for depth and backlash I can swap shims as neede by hand until I get the desired pack. Works everytime. An old mechanic watched me struggle for a while before showing me the "experienced" method.

That is an excellent trick. We ended up putting different gears in this truck after this video and used a slip fit on it. Absolutely the way to go. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jerry and Emily

Great solution on not having the correct torque wrench. I have the same one. Ive done well over 100 ring & pinions. They are way easier if you have the proper depth gauge. But there is usually a way around obstacles. Knowledgable as usual.

You said it!! It really is the worst. I wonder why that is? I know they add the smell to propane. Maybe they do the same with gear oil for some reason. Thanks Jon Jon. Jerry and Emily

@@UglyTruckExperience You might be on to something there. The zinc they add might intensify the smell. When I did heavy machinery maintenance it would smell like gear oil for blocks away from the maintenance yard. I can still drive by the place and smell it. Horrible. Lol

So what would be a decent process for figuring out what gear to use. I am sure there are many opinions and applications depending on what trans and stuff. I almost have the 5.3 out of Tahoe but I do not have a 2wd trans yet.
@UglyTruckExperience

Hey Andrew. When we start a swap I start thinking about what the owner wants. Most everything we work with is somebody that just wants the reliability and the hp that the ls provides. I figure we are removing a engine that might have been 150 hp and putting at least 300 back into it with a transmission that has a lower 1st and a overdrive. So no matter what it is going to be a huge improvement. I like to get them running and then drive them and just gauge it by the feeling of driving it. When I don't have a spare computer to run it off of there is the expense of having final drive ratio changed but that is pretty cheap considering. If you let me know what you are working with and what you want to accomplish, I could probably give you a pretty good recipe. Jerry

I 100% agree… anything i do will be a great improvement from what I have. So I have a 74 c10 w/350 and 350 all stock as far as I know (was my grandfathers) I recently bought a 2002 Tahoe with 5.3 and transmission is 4x4 but bad anyway. Almost got the motor out now. I am thinking I am going to try and get a 4L60 2wd transmission (unless you recommend something different)
@UglyTruckExperience

4l60 all the way. The highest gears that would have had would have been 2.73, so it is going to book down the road pretty good no matter what. If it has a tag in the glovebox it may say what ratio it was built with. Unless it is geared real low for some reason, you won't be disappointed. I would just get it up and running and cruise down the road at 60 mph and see what your rpms are. Cool truck. We have a 74 C20 that we drive every day. Keep us posted. Jerry and Emily

I may have missed it but can you show us how to hook up an aftermarket tachometer and did you figure anything out on the tow/haul button?
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 9 ай бұрын
Hello Danny. I haven't done a aftermarket tachometer. Most everything I have been doing is using the Dakota Digital dash just reads from the ECM signal. The next swap we are doing, we will be incorporating the BCM in order to make the tow/haul function work. It is something that we will absolutely do a video on. Thanks. Jerry

Well, I am going to critique your project, but I mean it in a positive way to point out some errors so you can correct them. First, I was cringing when you hammered so hard on those bearings. You did replace the nose bearing, but what you damaged most was the races, and you only replaced one. The bearing at the gear was probably damaged also because you were hammering way to hard. The damage is called 'brinelling' the bearing. You can look that up. To measure the setback on the pinion gear, put a srtaight edge on tha case gasket surface and measure straight to the gear, NOT from the axle centerline. Then measure straight from the case to the BACK of the bearing mount. Then measure the large bearing race and deduct HALF of that diameter. Now you have case to gear and case to axle center. The difference between them is the setback on the pinion. The carrier bearings must be pre-loaded, just like the pinion. Look up 'case spreader'. If you cannot rent one, there are a number of clever substitutes. You had all of the basics corrrect and did a better job than a lot of so called 'professional' mechanics. The loose carrier and damaged bearings may come back to haunt you, but maybe just be a little noisy and not last as long as it should. Now for the biggest error: the ratio. I don't know where 3.08 csmr from, but you're way off assuming you are using a trans that came with an LS motor. Start with the RPM you want at 65 mph. Say 2,200 RPM. 2,800 for performance. Now have your pretty wife calculate the rear axle using the circumference of the tires and the overdrive in the trans, typically around .7 You should be between 3.55 and 4.11 gears with 3.70 a 'happy place' depending on tire size. BTW, your wife reminds me of Lucille Ball. You two are probably not old enough to know who that is.
@UglyTruckExperience

Thanks Again. Rest assured that no bearings or races were hammered on without being replaced with new. Our videos are not a how to video. We try to entertain people and hopefully peak their interest in working on cars, or anything for that matter. Because of the timeframe, some things just don't end up in the video. The People that undertake this kind of work need to know to do their own research for whatever they are working on. I am sure a few mistakes will be made along the way, which is unfortunately the best way to learn. She is like Lucille Ball. She makes me laugh all the time!!! Thanks for watching. Jerry

Great video as usual guys!! I’m about to do the same thing. I have the same rear gear in mine, but where I’m putting a TH400 behind my LM7, I’m thinking about putting a lunchbox locker/mini spool in it instead and leave the ring and pinion. This is my daily, so the engine is basically stock. Thoughts?
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 9 ай бұрын
Hello David. Depends on what kind of driving you do and the conditions that you drive in. The limited slip that I put in this video is enough to make it feel a little squirrely on corners. The locker and definitely the spool could make your truck want to spin out on turns. If you end up changing it, let us know what happens. Thanks. Jerry

at 41:00 on the vid im thinking your math is backwards and you need too subtract .015 instead of add. Im going to keep watching to see
@kaiwilliamstone1858
@kaiwilliamstone1858 9 ай бұрын
Aww you skipped the recheck.... let me know if i was right about the math here. Also that custom pedal I won is working great but I would say if you do it again increase the ratio from pedal to throttle valve cable about 10 to 15 percent. It shifts pretty early on the 1-2 shift and how its set is on the lowest pin on the lever and at that setting it pulls the cable too far before it reaches wide open throttle, so it only goes to about 85 percent throttle. not complaining, just stating the facts. if i were to move it up it would up the shift point but lower total throttle travel because the cable has a set amount of travel it physically cannot exceed. if you have any input on how to resolve this i would appreciate it! thanks you guys rock!!!!
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 9 ай бұрын
Hello Kai. The only fix for that would be to get that ratio just right. I guess if I was building another one, I would make that anchor point at the bottom of the lever adjustable. In your case if you took that lever off and drilled a different anchor point closer to the pivot point that would increase your ratio. That was one of my concerns when we we're building that. If you could measure exactly how much travel there is in the cable I would make you a new lever if that helps. Thanks for letting me know. Jerry
