Russians did not care much about gays until the TV started to tell them to. Let's say in 2000s there were some gay bands, although some fake - like Tatu, but they were making the image of gay people and were quite popular. We had Boris Moiseev who was openly gay singing about gay love and still loved and popular. There was little hate towards them until gov decided this is a great ground to divide and conquer. They started this anti gay propaganda as a cheap populist trick. Some people bought into it, some not. Still, it is unlikely you will be beaten up in the street of the big cities for just looking a bit gay. Lots of gay people in Russian elites too.

As for Islam, if that's what you mean, they would like to preserve their values too. You or I may not agree but that is what they agreed when they formed a tribe/society and the common law is what preserves their society. Now let me ask you.
