Get some cool drag & drop VFX here! ► www.famefocus.com/go/getvfx/ ◄
It used to be that what you saw on a movie set would pretty much be what you saw in the final movie. If you wanted to have a mountain in the background, you'd have to go to one.
However with modern technology, CGI has made it possible to have that mountain in the background without even leaving your home. Just whip up a green screen and you're good to go!
This advancement in technology has meant for some big differences between what is filmed and what we see in the final movie.
Here are some Hollywood movies without the VFX applied!
Enjoy :)

I got a degree in RTF (radio, television and film) but ended up going a totally different direction down the road and became a registered nurse. The only thing I hate is everything I learned in pursuing my RTF degree totally takes the fun out of watching movies, especially these days when, like you said, there's much more CGI than most people realize.

I love videos that highlight the invisible VFX that we never even question. In Gravity, there are portions of the scenes where parts of Sandra Bullock are entirely CG and comped together to allow it to look like she's floating. In Civil War not just the airport was CG, but also pretty much every time Spider-Man and Black Panther are on screen they are VFX. There are lots of instances where movies that aren't about fantastical events use CG to enhance composition, to put actors together that couldn't be there on the day or just to create an idealized environment. The film 100 Foot Journey is a good example of this. Cheers!

One of the few times i actually love yt recs. Just got a green screen, already knowing how to key.. and my mind is going crazy with ideas. It's crazy what you can do as long as you know how to edit. I bet some of these movies could have saved a lot of money doing it right.. Then again, it depends on how much they're paying these people, doing the ocd style of editing required.

Editors don't draw people to buy tickets. That's also the same reason to why some actors get paid more than master filmmakers. It's unfair but that's just how businesses work. Studio can replace ILM with another studio and maybe people whine a bit about bad CG, but people will still go. Studio replace A-lister with someone with lesser ticket draw and people won't go.

It is a bit funny how over the years our eyes (or at least mine) are fooled by what is CGI and what is not. When a new movie comes out with special effects or CGI it looks so real you are fooled to believe it's the real deal, but when you go back a few months or even a year it's almost like that Image or effect just pops out and just looks out of place.

Yeah but then it ends up looking bland, like in Dunkirk where there is supposedly a massive evacuation which involved many people, machinery and animals. Yet all we see is a mostly empty stretch of beach with men lining up and cowering on or near a pier. Keep in mind, History Buffs brought this to mine and others attention with his video on Dunkirk and the limits it sets on itself by using practical effects.

@@tryhardgaminghd3166 If reality is available, then it will always look more convincing than CGI - _obviously._ Like for example, try using CGI to fake the gravity shifts in Fred Astaire's "Ceiling Dance" and make it look just as convincing - you won't be able to do that, because there is nothing to improve there. The room _actually did_ spin around so that the gravity shifts were _real_ from Fred Astaire's own perspective, and you cannot improve physical reality. Same thing with the zero gravity scenes in "Apollo 13"; the apparent weightlessness in those scenes was real as well, because they actually were subjected to zero gravity for real by riding a Zero-G airplane. You cannot improve that either with any amount of CGI whatsoever, because computer animations can never look more real than reality itself.

CGI has gone way beyond anything Thomas Edison ever could have imagined. I know some people think it takes the fun out of movies, but I totally disagree. The effects in movies are constantly getting better (go back and watch Jaws sometime) and that in itself is fantastic. What is also fantastic is that some very creative people have come up with how to do this and much much more. I enjoyed watching this KZbin video just as much as watching the movies themselves, so the fun is definitely still there for me. Smart people make the world go around... even if it's VFX!

I'm not saying that VFX have no place in Hollywood, but I feel like in this modern era of computer technology that a lot of the magic of effects in movies has been lost. In the old days, filmmakers had to figure out ways to make effects work so they'd look believable and convincing, and even if they had a cheap of "Film School 101" quality to them, they still managed to engage audiences into the creative process. With computers, on the other hand, there's somehow an artificial feel to it that takes you out of the experience - especially when it comes to settings: give me the warmth of a painstakingly painted canvas flat outside a window instead of CGI scenery superimposed via greenscreen any day.
@UnwantedSpirits
@UnwantedSpirits 6 жыл бұрын
Visual Effects artists are CONSTANTLY trying to figure out more ways to make things look more believable and convincing- that's how we got to our effects today. CGI isn't just a "hit a button and done" type of deal, the techniques used for cg in older movies are not abandoned, they were just translated digitally so that the process can become more accurate and easier to manipulate. There's a lot of study of physics, mathematics, and programming to make art. I mean, things even are still painstakingly painted- digitally. That's how much of the backgrounds, landscapes, and characters are textured and created. We still use miniatures, rigs, armatures, element additions, matte paintings.

If you look back at "the old days" they very rarely looked convincing. I mean seriously dude..
@JosephScarbrough
@JosephScarbrough 6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps convincing wasn't the best way to put it, but at least time and effort was put into them back then as opposed to just throwing something together with green screen and CGI. I mean after all, filmmaking and production are visual artforms, it's nice to see the creativity that goes into making them.
@timgoossens2416
@timgoossens2416 6 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Scarbrough Yeah, because the people that put there heart and soul in the CGI to make it look good aren't creative. There's an incredible amount of work they have to do. Like saying practical effects require more effort is absurd, and almost disrespectful to the people that work months just to make those 3 minutes look amazing. Sad that you can't appreciate that because there's "no creativity in it, and that there's no effort in cgi and greenscreens". Come on dude.

Tell me about it. During my audio production studies, when we looked into cinematography we briefly touched on production, concentrating 85% of the module on post-production and repair. I understand that it's an important aspect of sound in cinematography (and it's my profession now), but I was taught how to fix audio more than how to record it well in the first place. This is not the best way of going about it. Just like in regular recording studios, due to the fact that we use computers as the capture medium with an infinite amount of undo's and a plethora of tools to repair and reshape poorly captured audio, the art of making a great track is somewhat lost now. When tape was used, it was essential that everyone was in the zone and fully prepared for a take as tape was horrendously expensive (still is). Now this atmosphere is pretty much gone as another take can be made with no consequences in seconds. It was also impossible to do surgical edits simply because you can't see waveform on tape, whereas now you can zoom in and edit a sample that is only a 48000th of a second in length. Of course everything has its benefits and downsides, but making a hit record is no longer an art form that could only be achieved by this strange wizard behind a huge 1970s vintage SSL console, but a kid with a cracked version of FL Studio and a pair of cheap over-the-ear headphones.

Civil War: It makes perfect sense to CGI the airport scene considering how much destruction actually went on during that fight. An airport is also a busy place, especially one as big as the one portrayed. How much money do you think they would have had to pay to shoot on location EVEN if they were willing to shut it down for a film shooting? Wolf on Wolfstreet: It may seem like it's not necessary to CGI simple backdrops, but sometimes the directors of the film do not want the locations to be recognizable, or at least TOO recognizable to real life locations. Gravity: As for the props that aren't even there... Not lazy. It would be as if they were calling the prop makers lazy for not building a full size astronauts suit just because they CGed half of it. Godzilla: "There might be some CGI that might surprise you. Like when the military attacks the monster, there's nothing there. Just green screens, a fence and some soldiers." --you're right. I was fully expecting that scene to be shot on location with battleships n the background firing actual missiles at a real Godzilla. Batman v Superman: Contrary to what the video says... I think most people were not surprised that Batmans suit was mostly CGI. I... really wouldn't expect most humans to wear a suit that clunky and move around at all.

+Amadeus Eisenberg. I've got a question for you, and I'd like you to answer it without swearing or getting angry, if possible. thanks. What difference does it make to you? Say I've got two options for a shot I need. I could go fly across the atlantic to get a couple of shots infront of the statue or liberty to establish a scene is taking place in New york, and then from there on it'll mostly be indoor sets because I'm making the film here in Ireland and once I'm indoors it doesn't really matter as long as it feels like a new york-esque building. Or I could get those few new york exterior shots on a green screen, and ultimately achieve the exact same effect, but be able to produce my film faster, and more efficiently. Both give the same end result, so my question is: Unless doing some via cgi/vfx means actually impedes on the artistic vision and/or is noticeably not real, why does it matter to you? CG is just another tool in the filmmaker's toolkit, and the thing is, every one of those tools, from the dawn of filmmaking, has only been used to fool you in the same way cg is now. Practical effects (e.g. the animatronics in jurassic park) were simply there to fool you enough to suspend the disbelief that there's no live dinosaurs. Before computer set extensions, matte paintings were used (a pane of glass with a new background on it infront of the camera). the list goes on

The airport scene is one of the most grandiose scenes in the movie, so 1. I'm sure it was a lot more than one or two days of shooting, considering the actors barely even met, so it was shot on separate occasions. 2. It's an airport, it's not exactly cheap to shoot at an airport, potentially crippling its traffic. 3. Background projecting on a green screen is one of the most basic CGI techniques, meaning it's not only easy to make, but it's also pretty realistic, so no drawback on quality, and it's light on the budget.

+THEoWOLF I guarantee that it's at least as hard to record a scene where someone drives a freaking tank through a city, which by the way was done in "GoldenEye", and it was all physical scenery as well. Check out the video "GOLDENEYE Bond Tank Sequence" if you want crystal clear proof of that. In other words - recording a scene at an airport would be no problem at all, they could simply build a model of an airport or use one that is about to close anyway. You make it sound like it is extremely hard and almost impossible just because they didn't do it in this movie, but movie directors can find solutions to almost anything if they actually want to.

Don't get me wrong, it looks more beautiful afterwards, but didn't seem that bad the way it already was. But also at the same time, as somebody who loves to play with VFX, it blows my mind to see before and after stuff like this! because movie CGI is using far more CPU power than the graphic card of your PC even if it"s a big one... And it needs months of work (for a lot of very specialized people) to make a few seconds of good CGI, when in a game your PC just have a few milliseconds to create the next 60 images all alone... Your PC and a movie production are not playing in the same category !
