The most heartbreaking thing about this song is that Moses was never treated less than his brother. He was loved just as fully by his parents. They were always shown to be patient with Moses, and forgiving and guiding no matter how much he misbehaved. But all the same, Moses has to chose between the only family he has ever known, and the people he never knew he belong to. I can’t imaging the heartbreak Moses had to go through to run away from family, or his parents who spent the rest of their lives thinking he died in the desert.
@Alita_N99 Жыл бұрын
Yoooo i never even thought about it like that…I forgot for a hot second that his parents were gone by the time he came back and Ramses was Pharaoh. And yea it’s super heartbreaking, like obviously Moses is the one we root for in this story but the most tormenting scene for me is the one right after they cross the sea and Moses looks back out toward the water and for a moment you see Ramses just sitting on a rock crying out his brother’s name in vain. Like that is so sad. And to add to that, from Ramses’s perspective, all of this happened literally for no good reason. As far as he was concerned he was just carrying on the traditions, expanding the empire, being the ruler he was supposed to be, that he was DESTINED to be and then one day his missing brother comes back almost as if from the dead and starts threatening him and tearing his kingdom apart. Moses plagued his land, kills his soldiers, bring suffering unto his people, and leads his entire workforce out of Egypt. His son dies and at the very end he tries to gather the last few men he has to get his slaves back and bring order back to things and he’s met with failure and absolutely nothing left to live for. Not a home, not a family, no power, no people. NOTHING. That’s fucking tragic…

1:35 I know it's a small detail, but I really like how the song fades out during that last "All I ever wanted." It kind of sounds sentimental in a way and symbolizes how Moses' life as he knows it is about to change, Because right after this, he learns the truth of his origins, and the genocide at the hands of Seti.

I want to clarify, cause I know some nutjob is gonna say this is because all of Disney worships the devil or something This was due to two things, Katzenburg asked Eisner, the C.E.O at the time, and full disclosure, Eisner and Katzenburg had a mutual 'dislike' of each other Also due to Disney at the time wanting to maintain a completely neutral stance on all things religious, to keep revenu- I mean to please all their customers. This policy was thrown out later on when Hunchback came out

This is Pharaoh's son realizing that the he is the same human being as the ones he has enslaved. This is Pharaoh's son realizing that all he has ever known, and all he had ever wanted was built on top of denying other human beings of their dreams. He will bring the plagues to Egypt because thus said the Lord. Truth must prevail. Good must prevail. As long as Pharaoh blinds himself and hardens his heart to the truth, the plagues must come. Thus said the Lord.

As much as I like this song (which I do), there is one problem that I have with this sequence: The relief of the family depicted at 1:23. Coming on the heels of the Amarna period and the rule of Akhenaten, the royal family would not be depicted in such a fashion in addition to the Aten not being depicted as well. This comes from the fact that succeeding pharaohs sought to erase this whole period from Egyptian history for straying from the religious beliefs at the time.

What an inverse of the usual “I Want” song. It’s not about what Moses wants to have - he already has that - it’s about what he needs to do.
