A nice thing with the LM3914 is that in the LED display as a "bar" mode (like he has done here), you can simply connect a transistor, mosfet, etc. to an appropriate LED cathode and if needed add a relay, and you can use the circuit to disconnect the battery under test once it has reached a "charged to" voltage and/or "discharged to" a voltage level(s) of your choice. You can also to a fair degree choose the resolution of your measurements by simply changing resistor values and using a front-end voltage divider if needed. So there's some pretty good and EASY flexibility with the LM3914 which goes beyond just visually monitoring the battery voltage with pretty lights.

Hi, thank you for the circuit. I made one. Same with same value components. Problem is, during bar mode, first red LED is on and keeps still during voltage change. I am not sure it stays on during bar mode. At graph mode first 5 LED is OK slowly lighting till 11,25V but afterwards 0.5V change makes all rest of the LED light up. By mistake I cut 4,7K resistor out of the circuit and it start working correct smooth way between 10-13,6V after calibrating with POT... any idea what is going on and what that 4.7K stands for.

This is an undercomplex solution. The voltage depends also on age, temperature and current. You only measure the open circuit voltage which works for some special cases. Look for more sophisticated chips which implement per example EKF or other algorithms. Of course, they are more expensive.

Electronics Today International magazine used a LM3900 with 2 LM339 comparators to form a bar graph display. The LED's were driven via a 2 transistor constant current circuit. Featured in their Top Projects issue 4 magazine back in 1976. Could be calibrated as a VU or a power meter.

Whilst this will give the voltage of a battery, it is of little use- for most batteries if the voltage is down by just 20% it would be unwise to take further current. So the bottom 7 indicators are of no value, they are just taking current from your battery! If you want to make this (for other uses) using a bargraph display will be easier and neater. To be useful, this needs to offset and compress the range- can be done by adding an op-amp.

Very informative It would be very good if the voltmeter were 20 leds (2 lm3914) and the voltage range was from 10.3 minimum to 15.8 volts maximum (resolution 0.3 volt). that is in point mode and not in vumetro .. of course thank you very much if you could upload a video like that with the diagram. greetings and thank you very much.
