does it convert each HDMI input to the output resolution and frame rate? if so, how does it compare to the quality of conversion of the ATEM switchers, eg. if I feed it a 1080i signal, how well does it de-interlace the video?

Thanks for your review. Looking to add a switcher to my DJ booth and AV Tool bag. My DJ Booth has a Flatscreen on front to playback still images & videos. They come from multiple sources and need to be switched easily. They need to follow audio as well. I also do a little bit of corporate AV work where I need a switcher for different hdmi sources. Is it possible to use PIP on a confidence monitor and not on the program? I don't stream much, but these days it's something I believe clients will be asking for more often. What Switcher would be most comparable in features and price? Thanks!

Thanks for your timely explanation. We bought the 4 channel for our church more than 6 months now. However, we have never used it for streaming since we have no idea how to get the PowerPoint lyrics for the songs on screen. I believe we mastered the other sections. Any suggestions?

Hi John, nice review ! Wanted to check, so far have you ever faced any sort of issues with this device ? I had Atem Mini which I already sold due the lack of Multiview. I am looking for something that has seperate Multiview ,Program Output and Webcam output. Was after Atem Mini Pro but it just lacks the Program output but this switcher looks more appealing to me as it can be configured without the need of an extra Laptop during Livestreaming, has headphone Jack for monitoring, has T Bar etc but I am little hesitant just because of the brand as it is not very well renowned like Blackmagic. What are your recommendations from your experience so far with this switcher so far ?

How does it deal with camera audio through HDMI? Looks like it’s similar to the ATEM Mini but I didn’t see you cover that aspect. Overall this seems like a great alternative to the ATEM mini switchers. Love the multi view menu with everything built in and ability to connect a USB drive to pull media. Both of those are SUPER handy features.

It will bring any audio in via HDMI just as you would expect. As mentioned, however, you cannot process that audio with Limiter/gate so you will need to bring in nice clean audio.

That's astoundingly cute. I've run across some AVMatrix... Matrices in my time, but never one of their switchers. The menu/MV seems very sensible - I'd be curious to see their bigger switchers as well!

I use an atem mini pro currently but because of the upstream speed at the location I use it at I have to run it through obs to bring down the size and bitrate anyway. I also need to send a program feed to other rooms and processing it through obs at delay so it would be nice to have something with a second HDMI output to send the program to the other rooms without delay. One last thing is that computers run Linux so it would be nice to have something that I can make adjustments on through the device instead of needing to bring a pc for adjustment. Not sure I could live without the audio features of the ATEM though.

The original version of this (AVMATRIX HVS0401) actually had 3 HDMI outputs plus the USB output (although from what I've read, the USB only worked on certain versions of Windows 10). It also had RCA audio inputs as well as the 2 x 3.5mm jack inputs. It didn't have as much functionality (by far!) as this model - but I think if they'd have kept the 3 HDMI outputs and the RCA inputs for the HVS0402U it would have made it a much more compelling option. Imagine having a HVS0402U and a Teradek Vidiu X for a fairly small 'all in one' mobile solution?

Typically you would attach a HDMI recorder and record with that - or even capture the USB output into a computer and use OBS (or similar) to record

No it does not record anything at all. You will need to record all of your cameras on the cameras themselves. No recording abilities are included on this device.

I have basically done all that John has shown us. My three cameras are in, audio from main cam is excellent, multi screen and transition ok. We bought it for our small church online service. Our problem is how to get in the PowerPoint lyrics for songs, title etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

For this, you can use the Upstream or Downstream keyers, that is exactly what they are made for. Using something like Luma or Chroma keying will remove the unwanted parts of your PowerPoint.

For the "PC only" control app, as there is a Java icon I bet it's just a self executable Java app, you can probably extract the Jar and simply run it on a Mac using Java. (unless there really are special libraries used to build it or something)

They actually have the ecosystem you mentioned, they are just not well known. They seem to be trying to compete with Blackmagic Design because they are not priced like a cheep knockoff. They even have some designs that are very interesting. See if they will send you one of the PVS0615 or PVS0615U it looks pretty interesting and you wouldn't have to build a case for it. It looks like a laptop but it's a 6 channel switcher switcher I'm seriously considering purchasing the PVS0615U.

Yes, I am aware of their other products in general, the ecosystem I was referring to was how many of BMDs devices can talk to each other and work together.

Hm... If they'd set the price a bit lower, I'd defo bought it for this transition period between my Intel Mac and the updated M1(X) that's coming end of 2021. I've had my Atem Mini Pro for more than a year and suffered from only being able to have one picture in picture. The AVMatrix gives obviously two and it's a great option just by itself. I'm teaching guitar and three camera setup is very important. I can do it in Ecamm but my computer is crawling with a choppy performance in the end. No matter CamLink capture cards and a Thunderbolt Dock and everything optimized to the smallest detail, it isn't smooth when I finally stream it. The solution I've come up with is to bring in two cameras and PiP with Atem Mini Pro and then add the third camera with CamLink, place it all in the Ecamm scene. Still tricky and not consistent performance really. The computer fans are having a party so I'm even using Turbo Boost Switcher app to cope with it. Sorry, just rambling here.. great presentation John, thank you!

Having 2 hdmi outputs as well as the usb is a great feature - especially as they are configurable. This is way beyond what the ATEM Mini, Mini Pro, and Mini Pro ISO can do and would probably have led to me buying it in preference to the original ATEM Mini. Adding the ability to switch audio similarly would be a game changer (eg stop audio from hdmi1 going to the usb).

How many USB-A ports are found on a MacBook from the last 5 years....Zero. USB-C is the new standard.

This general line of video switchers (not this model, but others by the same OEM sold under x brands) had a USB A socket on the device for connection to the PC. This is violating the standard, no cable USB A to USB A should exist. So them deciding on USB C which is suitable for up- and downstream is good to see.

I agree, USB-A to USB-A should never exist. I've seen it on external hard drive enclosures too and I always avoid it. I'm glad they are using USB-C on this because it's much more flexible.

I hope you make more videos about this. I'd love to see it used with H2R, and see some real world reliability testing. The big missing element for me seems to be the software, but especially the saving states and macro. BMD really does that well. This seems to just save full states, but hard to say as no one covers it in their demos, and the manual is...simplistic. I tried to download the software for mac, as you said, its out now, but its all in Chinese and pops up a lot of security notices to install it, so Im going to steer clear of that. I personally would love to use an Atem Mini Extreme, because i need the 2 switchable HDMI outputs (need a clean feed of the presenter slide computer to the projector for a live event, a multiview for the TD, and a PGM feed to zoom.) The problem is ATEM Mini Extreme has way too many buttons on the unit especially all the camera control buttons). This is just too intimidating if i need to train a non-expert volunteer to do a simple switch. I really like this panel layout, the knob menu, and the audio delay.

What a horrible looking device. Reminds me of a GCSE technology project. The marketing strategy of this is bizarre . It seems inferior to BMD. It would have to be as cheap as the Atem mini basic to be vaguely of interest. It’s just a low end copy of something far far better. Did I say how ugly it is?!
