Carroll O'Connor, Jean Stapleton, Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers, Danielle Brisebois.
The show ranked number-one in the yearly Nielsen ratings from 1971 to 1976. It became the first television series to reach the milestone of having topped the Nielsen ratings for five consecutive years.
Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
Those were the days.
And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man
Like Herbert Hoover again.
Didn't need no welfare state,
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days.

Can't believe it's been fifty years since this sitcom premiered! I remember seeing this as part of Nick-at-Nite's lineup when I was twelve.

My 3 year old runs into the room when this comes on, and laughs when Edith hits the top note at 0:21! Personally I enjoy the complex meter on the line about Herbert Hoover.

Missing simplicity!!! Missing real landlines too!! Who wants to go on a party line and spilt the bill again?! When my inlaws died they were the last family on the party line and their phone bill was 12$ a month. This was just in the last few years. They had a rotary wall phone and a cordless in the den. They had a good life. Now the large garden is overgrown by the new young couple in the old house. I miss Sheldons Swiss chars and always will. Sigh ..... nostalgia has some comfort tho!! We were LUCKY to have had it.

The series saw something of a revival in the early 1990's. Following the success of a 20th Anniversary Retrospective special in February 16, 1991, CBS rebroadcast series episodes in prime time that summer, as a mid-season summer replacement for Murder, She Wrote, in the latter instance paired with Norman Lear's new (and decidedly less successful) series Sunday Dinner. The airings drew better than expected ratings, and positive reactions. The latter was Lear's return to TV series producing after a seven-year absence (after the failed A.k.a. Pablo for ABC in 1984), and CBS was hopeful that scheduling the new series on Sundays at 8:30/7:30c that summer, after All in the Family reruns at 8/7, would bring long-time Lear fans into Sunday Dinners audience. This was not to be, as Sunday Dinner lost much of the lead-in from the AITF reruns; it was cancelled after the 6-week tryout run, due to being poorly received by audiences. As a result, the network continued to air reruns of the series at times throughout the 1991-92 TV season. At times the rebroadcasts drew higher ratings than original programming airing in prime time, including much of CBS' own programming.

I couldn't watch this show as a kid in the 70s, hated some Archie Bunker and his place...fast forward 20 years, it's one of the best shows from my youth, and I can laugh at things now I couldn't as a kid, loved Carol in Heat of the Night in the 80s.

I just found this out. Family Guy was heavily inspired by All In The Family. Not only just the intro with Peter and Lois singing in front of a piano which only lasts for a few seconds before the intro becomes a big musical production. Peter always wears a white shirt, his wife has red hair and speaks with a nasal voice, and The staircase in the Griffin living room is behind the living room. Peter is an ignorant loud mouth, and a lovable character. The title of the show even has the word "family" in it. And of course the show is highly offensive, even though Peter isn't bigoted against anyone the show manages to somehow insult everyone. And like All In The Family, Family Guy has been on the air for many years. My mother watches Family Guy and she watched All in The Family as a teenager. I suspect she likes the cartoon because her subconscious mind probably makes the connection to All in the Family. Or maybe she's just a real pip who doesn't know any better lol.
