I remember watching this episode! I so enjoyed listening to my soap while doing my housework. Old days! House was immaculate, dinner on the table at 6 pm, laundry done, bills paid and rent for our duplex was $520 which back then was high. I was 21, expecting my baby girl, quite happy! Thereafter, had to incorporate Sesame Street, electric company, and great space coasters……lol…. I always thought Tom reminded me of our Siamese cat……I am 63 and it crossed my mind AGAIN watching this vid……go figure….😂

One of the best things about AMC was that the characters were allowed to grow without sacrificing their true selves. By the mid/late 1980s, characters like Erica, Brooke, Devon, and NIna were allowed to mature as the decade progressed. Also, AMC cleverly laid the groundwork for its second decade with the multi-generational Cortlandt saga.

Mark, to me, was Brooke's first love. Real, genuine love. I don't remember everything about their relationship...gee, this was 1980, I was about 14 in 1980. But Brooke deeply loved him. I don't really think Brooke had that deep, everlasting love again until she met Edmund, who was better suited for her. First, I think Mark always loved Ellen. Edmund deeply loved Brooke. Edmund and Mark reminded me of one another. They both, to me, stood out from the crowd. I think Edmund was the love that Brooke craved and deserved. Edmund was everything that Brooke got right about love, and Mark was everything that Brooke got wrong about love. Of course, Brooke herself sabotaged her perfect love with Edmund. Maybe she felt it would just eventually play out in the same way her loved for Mark played out. Again, I don't remember everything that happened with Mark/Brooke, but I do see a lot of 'sameness' in Edmund and Mark.
@tammyramey
@tammyramey 4 жыл бұрын
@Adrienne Gurge Oh that's true for sure...she was fiercely independent...to the degree that sometimes, I don't believe Julia Barr played Brooke vulnerable enough. I mean, it's one thing to be independent, but sometimes Brooke was a downright shrew. And that's coming from a huge Brooke/Julia fan. However, I do believe Edmund was 'the one' for Brooke...she let him get away on purpose. Brooke said it herself to Tom. With Edmund, everything went 200 miles per hour. He was so complicated in Brooke's eyes. Brooke could't let Edmund hurt her in the way that Mark (and others) did. So she hurt him first. By the way, RIP John Callahan :(

I know Sybil was underhanded in sleeping with Cliff when he had been rejected by Nina. However, Sybil was a somewhat pathetic character. Early on when she saw that Cliff was falling for Nina, she expressed her bitterness about her life to Betsy. She had grown up in poverty versus how Nina was so wealthy and could have anything she ever wanted. Nina even had Cliff's attention while she was pushed aside. I like how Brooke was after Mark Dalton during this time. I got to meet Mark LaMura (Mark Dalton) several years ago. He told me that working on AMC during this time period was really wonderful. As I recall, Mark was in love with Ellen and it was the age difference where the woman was older that was the big issue. Understandable about Donna's anxiety when Chuck starts dancing with Tara. I don't know in the end what happened when Tara (Mary Lynn Blanks here, the one replacement of many) was finally written out for good. She kept popping up in the 80s and Chuck always was drawn to her.

I think Palmer does the crazy scene well, building in the likelihood that at the party, he'd had a few drinks by then. The actor playing him had been an internationally known ballet dancer, which you might see from the way he moves around, and he actually balances his weight to show him barely holding back the Doberman from running toward its prey.

Perhaps it's just me, but ABC soaps seemed to have been more creative than CBS during this time. Look at this storyline here for example. I liked classic CBS soaps but ABC soaps had more fun storylines like this. NBC which just fell into 3rd place from spinning most the 70's at number 1 lost its edge quick by this decade.

Since we won't see to0 many more episodes from year 1980. I'd like to know what stages of some of what was going on in the other characters life. Was Ellen Sheperd married to Mark Dalton yet? why did he escore Sybil Thorne there? was she just a friend or a date(back when ppl actually DATED)also what was going on with Ann Martin? Were she and Paul past the pain of losing Beth yet or was Ellen Sheperd still keeping him company? what was boy crazy Devon getting herself? And did this episode take place not long after Erica's disco closed down? guessing that only the goalpost part of the building was shown and that Brooke escorted Tom to Nina's party, I'd say Erica had went to Holywood by now to audition for a role in the movie Brandon Kingsley had to produce(Brandon may not have been a character yet)Im sure things were still strained between the Cudahy's from the fiasco of the birth control decit of 2 months before.
