One of the worst things they ever did was have that tragedy befall Laura. And I think the writers knew what a mistake it was because years later they have Brooke adopt a teenage girl who happens to be named "Laura".

Oh my God...the kid has a simple fever. They're talkig as if he's got some terrible disease with no cure. How ridiculous!!

I know, but it was a high fever and the antibiotics did not have it under control.
