Great points on not raising the exhaust roof too high. You need the torque curve right behind peak horsepower. Otherwise, if the chain really bites in (gets hungry as Buckin' would say), the saw can't power through. Of course, all that goes out the window if you are running a properly tuned expansion chamber. But that is a horse of a different color. Love your videos Harvey. Thanks so much for doing them for us!

I'm here to tell you, HARVEY IS SPOT ON HERE. I have done this conversion with a 266SE. I tried the cheap rout with an aftermarket intake block and gaskets. They leaked! Make sure your intake screws are sleeved with the insulators and do what Harvey said to get the heat out of the saw. I opened up my muffler which helped a lot. I was having some vapor lock issues. I believe I cured that by the muffler mod and running her just a tiny bit fat.

Good stuff iron horse you are a100% correct with using nitro another way to put it is the top fuel nitro drag cars the engines are almost hydro locking on fuel as they make that 1/4 mile run they burn around 20 gallons for warm up and one run it’s crazy to even imagine that much fuel being dumped into an engine that fast so 3 times the fuel in a saw and running a short time of 3 minutes and being out of fuel is spot on

Hell just running high octane gas makes a difference. More octane slower burn so we need either more room to burn or bigger bang. Bigger bang equals more compression. Put oxygen in your gas if you want faster burn, and run less compression. I have a Lyman with the 6 hole turn table to run 3 sets on dyes. Also have a single 1 dye at a time rock chucker. The old anschutz savage 64 in 222. Rem is picky with ammo. It has a slower twist in the barrel 40 to 45 gn lead only, except I dont use lead solid copper.

The newest Holzfforma 272 intake gaskets are back like the original oem. They have the small hole for the impulse. I recently did this conversion with a grey top 61. Used a highway big bore popup. First saw ive ever ported. Way more power. I used oem 272 screws and my 61's Carb(scared of the China carb). I couldn't find an oem intake or gaskets so tried farmertec. The newest batch of farmertec stuff is holding up now that they are making a complete 272xp. I had the same crummy luck that you had with Hogan's 266 and the older aftermarket gaskets blowing out except it was on my old 2100CD. Keep up the great videos.

Thanks so much for sharing! I have an old 61 blue top, first firewood saw I bought. Still runs good, but doesn't get used much anymore because it is slow and heavy. Nice solid saw though. I always wondered about bumping it to a 272 - and what that would involve. I guess carb, intake, bolts, and piston/cyl with a little clean up. I think I'll keep it an old slow stock dog, for nostalgia purposes, unless it gets smoked in some big wood. Then, it will be reborn the way you show and say! Thanks again.

I rebuilt an old white top 61 with a farmertec piston, in a stock open port cylinder with some really minor porting on jug. I matched the case to the transfers and reduced intake skirt by .035" and also the bigger 268 style carb and minor muffler mod And it runs quite well .

Try a base delete and fresh piston on that 61 . They run all right. Good torquey saws.

@@vintagesawyer6246 Thanks! Food for thought! You should show how you do the piston jet holes. I didn't quite get that, though I understand the concept and reason. For some reason I like that old saw - maybe because it cut a lot of wood, and was my 1st "real" saw.
@vintagesawyer62463 жыл бұрын
@@blanko8463 I have photos somewhere so I may make a short video. I really have no Idea if it helped or not so its probably not recommended. Drilling through a piston WILL weaken it structurally. In my case I was willing to risk it for research(lol). I would go with a slope side piston if you can get one. The part that faces the transfers is kinda angled so as to wedge the fuel up there as the piston goes down.That's the way the factory piston looked. But I got a Farmertec and wanted to put the saw together so I thought I'd try something.✌

Clarification? You said, which I believe to be true, that nitro delivers more oxidizer to the fuel combustion process. Then you said the carb will need to have a bigger air intake. Could you explain why?
@Ketis1985Ай бұрын
Personally in my humble opinion i say that 98 exhaust opening is too high on 272xp due to the short stroke of the saw. It gets even worse with that high exhaust if you open up the transfers.

Hi Harvey. Thanks so much for your videos. I am currently building a 61 to 272 myself. You might be interested in the carburetor work I’ve been doing on it. I’m modifying the stock 61 carb for more flow. I bored it out and installed a larger throttle butterfly and slightly bored out the Venturi. Spent a ton of time making sure to keep the steps in the factory spots. Just got it back together and ready for testing. The throttle side opening is now 20.5 mm compared to the stock 19 mm (3/4). I have one question for you. You mentioned 160 degrees max for the intake port. Do you have a minimum number? I’m looking for as much low end grunt as I can get out of this 272 top end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also love hyway, however, some cylinders have poorly adhered chrome. So be weary if ur planning on porting. In stock applications, it's not an issue. Because the chrome is adhered up into the ports and thins out. So it holds together well. If u port, ur risking chipping at the exhaust. Iron horse, have you ran into this problem with highway yet? It only seems to be the problem with some models tho. Not all the cylinders are easy to peel.
