It's awesome the way you compared food prep with a bushcraft knife VS the Firebox Folding Chef Knife. I tried to make bushcraft knives work for my food prep for years but it always felt awkward. Your comparison really illustrates why that's the case. Thanks so much Ernie and to those commenting with their feedback. I sure appreciate all the support.

that’s a really nice knife for a lot less than i thought it would be. it would be a great addition for someone who knows what they are doing preparing food. i’m a hack when it comes to cooking so i use a jimmy lile rambo knife and an opinel. the lile is quite expensive and very sharp. it works ok but for some reason i really like it and have fun with it. the opinel works well and i should use it more. i’ll pick up one of those for my camping buddy who does a lot more cooking and knows what he’s doing.

I’ve tried many different knives for the camp kitchen. Although they work None have been great. So when I found out about the KickStarter I grabbed two chef knives. One for me & one for a gift ….. maybe 😂. FireBox 🔥 makes awesome products, I have many items from them. 🔥🇨🇦

Now that's a nice knife! And as a dedicated but modestly capable cook, I had wanted a capable portable blade for travel/camp use. Found the BPS Savage, a full tang flat grind on a wide blade of 1066 carbon steel. The handle is a riveted dark bog oak and it's shaped up and away from the edge line to give just enough knuckle clearance. Though I got it for less, it's now about $40. The steel will have to be wiped down with a good oiled rag dedicated to that blade, and the sheath they provided is heavy duty and well made and a bit overlong. Possibly that's why they were so reasonably priced -- BPS is becoming very well known for out-of-the-box sharpness, and this one is no exception.

Old News, This must have been in your back logs. Since you mentioned the start up. I love this knife. Of course it is not as good as my Shun Santoku. ( I am A Chef, So I Know Santoku Knifes) Yet a very good out in the woods replacement, And no worries of Blade chipping since the knife edge is softer than A Shun. Steve also has a medium cutting board that fits in the Self Reliance Outfitters Frypan/w Lid and the knife will also fit under the lid, even with Steves ( Firebox Stoves) cut board. Absolutely a great combo kit for me.

I love cooking at home and I have struggled with finding good cooking equipment for the outdoors. I use Opinel knives for camping but I have been looking for a good folding chef’s knife. I enjoy Steve’s cooking videos and will be picking up this knife and the firebox pizza stone for our family trips this summer. There is nothing better than cooking outdoors! If you have the time, I would love a review on Steve’s ultra cook kit with the addition of the pizza stone. That looks amazing!

When I first tried to cut up food with my expensive (to me) Tops Brakimo bushcraft knife, I was pretty disappointed. The blade thickness on that is even more than the ones you showed and it pretty much just crushes through an apple. It's an awesome knife for everything else, but when it comes to food prep, it just doesn't do the job efficiently. I was able to pick up one of these Firebox folding chef's knifes just before Christmas when they were blowing out what they called "blemished or seconds". It's an awesome knife, and I really couldn't figure out what was defective about mine unless it is a slight, almost imperceptible wiggle at the lock, which goes away completely when you are using the blade. Funny thing is, I find myself even pulling it out to use in the kitchen, even though I have a very nice knife set. I can get paper thin onion slices with it.

10Cr15MoV is (on paper - more about that at the end) supposed to be very similar to VG-10. That would make it a very good steel, for a kitchen knife it would be considered very high quality (kitchen cutlery usually uses steel with high chrome and medium carbon to stay very stainless but easily sharpenable with a steel rather than having to go to the stone.) 10Cr15MoV is a Chinese designation. Often the lower quality Chinese designated steels (for instance 8Cr15MoV) have a much wider variance in quality control. The 9Cr and 10Cr steels are less likely to have such a wide variety in quality control, but it's not too uncommon to have 8Cr15MoV bladed knives from the same manufacturer with such a difference in hardness they don't even seem like the same steel. I've had Kershaws with 8Cr blades so soft the dull when the wind blows on it, and some that hold an edge as well as a knife with AUS-6A steel. The lower designations of Chinese steels can be suspect, but with the higher end steels you're much less likely to have a problem.

Also for the record 10cr15mov is often classed as Chinese produced steel using the same recipe as Japanese VG10 steel which is considered excellent for kitchen cutlery applications

just got one and... I find the HANDLE way too heavy and those pivot washers are thick thinning down the washers & liners would be great maybe some skeletonizing the liners as well the BLADE is on the thin side, almost too thin a chef's knife should not flex like a fillet knife the only reason it doesn't flex a lot is the wide width of the blade don't get me wrong it's a quality product, it just has its' issues I'll be using it, it just won't go on any long hikes

a scandi grind isn't made to slice. the thickness doesn't really matter if you have a full flat ground blade.

Comparison's against a bushcraft knife is a bit silly to be fair man as you'll need both with say a firebox stove but personally I'm not into Japanese style cooking knives but I would like to switch out my opinel/camp kitchen knife one day but this just don't do it for me
