All Night, All Day (Angels Watching Over Me)

Well, I couldn't go to sleep, so I got up and sat back down at the piano. This old spiritual kept playing over and over in my head, so I reckon it's high time I put another spiritual on my page. It must have been of the Spirit because if you'll notice about the time I hit that second chorus, Spartacus the Labrador runs off camera and has a praise break (listen to that collar shaking and rattling). He shouts it out and sneaks back in and lays down under the piano.
Let me move on...
Not too long ago we were at a church doing some piano servicing and in the choir room I noticed a cross stitching hanging on the wall depicting angels watching over a flock of sheep with the words, "Angels Watching Over Me". It took me back to last October when I had the honor to sing this old song at Sis. Dorothy Lee's home going after she shed this cancer ridden earthly body and took her rest. Sis. Lee sang soprano in the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Mass Choir when I was directing in college, and this was one of her songs on which to sing lead vocal. I can still see her on the far end of the choir loft in her choir robe, microphone in hand, and that head reared back letting 'er fly. She tore it up. There is just something unique and special about these old gospel songs that reach people in a way no other genre of music can. They can't be hurried. We have to 'take our time' and whether it's for 3 minutes or 30, let the Lord have His way in our worship.
This one is long. Trust me, I could have gone longer. It's easy enough to close the video if it's too tedious for some listeners. For those of you that enjoy the old songs, for those that need to be reminded of the angels watching over us, and in memory of Sis. Dorothy Lee, here's my rendition of "All Night, All Day."

I was raised in pentecostal black church and there are certain things about music that catch your ear. I was searching for "Angels Watching Over Me" and found this incredible gem that I can't stop listening to. The first thing that caught my ear as I was listening was the "sanctified" sound of the piano, but then this man opens his mouth to sing and the next thing I know, I'm fighting tears and praising God! I feel the presence of God on all of these songs! I just don't get that with these newer songs and artists, so thank you and thank God for the gift you're sharing! Please keep sharing!

I attest to the fact that despite the unimaginable damage and pain we have endured because of racism God has been incredibly gracious and merciful to allow White people who have position and power to intervene on our behalf and show favor. It might not change the world but one person cannot change the whole system. As a blessing and favor, it is as if they ptoclaim, in positions they occupy, "Not on my watch"...and that can make a difference in our lives, the lives of our children and our world. One person, one chance at a time, and that ican be a sufficient display of hope restored. So I hope that for everyone, that they too have such blessed encounters and experiences. That can surely be the equivalent of restitution and amends--even on a small scale. Everyone God touches has got soul.

There was a time when we had a culture of soul however that was centuries ago and the memory is gone, and rekindling that fire for us looks like paying homage to Black culture and listening to and supporting Black people, because sadly too often we love your culture and music but not your people.

When I was in 2nd grade in a (primarily Italian) Catholic school, our teacher, a young postulant nun, taught us this song! Today I watched the Sam Cooke documentary on Netflix, and then Googled him where I learned that "the angels keep on watching over me" was sung at Mr. Cooke's funeral . It's been more than 60 years since I heard this song and it was wonderful to hear it sung so beautifully!

Your voice is so angelic and I've listened to this song over and over again. It didn't matter how long it was. But one thing that made me listen to it more so in the last few days is that the Angels were watching over our communities in Louisiana for the past few days. Although there were total devastation in some of our communities in neighboring cities there were only seven fatalities of lives lost. So we know that the Angels were watching over them. We know that every material things that we possess is only through what God have allowed us to have and can be replaced. So thank God for our lives? I saw this video four years ago for the first time and kept it in my favorites. I came across it today and it reminded me of the story of David and Saul. David would play the harp to get rid of Saul’s tormenting spirit. What an amazing gift you have! If you are depressed, sad, unhappy, or tormented by anything, just play this song.
