Given how often Soviet and Russian scientists' names are mentioned, at least in condensed matter physics textbooks, I feel that they are underrepresented in the Nobel Prize for Physics accumulative country prize count. Probably because of the Cold War. Then again, Einstein often argued against any division by country. Maybe that was the wiser perspective, in the end.

Nope, not at all. By the way there's no reason of showing off t*errorist country representatives in our physics textbooks, instead we should notice those who they are desperately attacking in order to stop their progress and existence.

It's not so much about nationality, it's more about race
@devalapar7878
@devalapar7878 Жыл бұрын
@@eddiemunster8634 It has absolutely nothing to do with race. The German race hasn't changed. It's the same race for 2000 years. But for most of German history, Germans were underdeveloped. So I have no idea why you would think white people are more intelligent. You can predict most of history through geographic differences and the different opportunities tech creates. For example Africa has 700 rivers. Europe has over 100 thousand. So it's a lot easier to feed people in Europe. Therefore you can have more and denser populations which have enormous advantages. And that's just one point. We could talk about climate, diseases, soil, mountains,... there are so many things that matter. Just look at the math Olympiads. You have people from all over the world. And the number of gold medals usually depends on how long a country has participated.
@devalapar7878
@devalapar7878 Жыл бұрын
@@marioluigi9599 You are right. I treat the UK like an American vassal state. But there is a good reason for that. The anglo-saxon sphere profits tremendously from their shared culture and space. For example, Switzerland is doing great, because it can draw support, resources, labor and know-how from their successful neighbors. And almost everyone in Switzerland can speak more than one language like german, french, English, Italian, and a fourth national language almost nobody speaks. I admit I am not sure who has more per capita. Even if I can explain Switzerland's success, it is still impressive that a small country like that has so many Nobel prize winners.

If we have a small country, we argue for per capita measurement. If we have won more in recent years, we argue for a timeline representation. If we have few physicists, we argue for a per physicist measurement. If some of the physicists born in our country win for another country, we argue for country of origin. If physicists born in other countries win for our country, we argue for country of sponsorship. What we have all learned is to fudge the numbers to get our way. Let us hope that the physicists have not all learned likewise.

And then if you remove outliers, There are still a ton of small countries that technically arent outliers. Just as there are different laws, taxes, economic differences, and cultures between the different American states, there's a European Union in Europe, with open borders between the member states, one European currency, one EU flag, one EU Parliament and Commission, EU laws and EU elections, etc. It's at this point in time an Union, not yet a Federation. Culturally and historically European nations are connected in many ways (both in positive as in negative ways), and the topographical maps of Europe have seen a zillion changes through the Ages, so there are more connections than some people think or know.

Actually both the country of birth and the country of the research has its part in the success. The country of birth usually gives the 'basic' education (sometimes up to university level and also may provide early research experience) that obviously has a lot to do with the later success of the Nobel prize winner. And the country of the research usually provides the resources and the possibility to conduct the work awarded by the prize.

*NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS IS A JOKE* Yes, there is a consensus among experts that the Nobel Prize in Physics is biased towards the West. This is evidenced by the fact that the vast majority of Nobel laureates in physics have come from Western countries. For example, as of 2023, 81% of Nobel laureates in physics have been from Europe, North America, and Australia. There are a number of factors that contribute to this bias. One factor is that the Nobel Committee, which selects the Nobel laureates, is based in Sweden and is composed primarily of Swedish scientists. This means that the committee is more familiar with and has easier access to Western scientists and their work. Another factor is that Western countries have a long history of scientific investment and have developed world-class scientific institutions. This gives Western scientists a significant advantage in terms of resources and opportunities. Finally, there is also a cultural bias towards Western science. The Nobel Committee is more likely to recognize and reward scientific work that is done in the Western tradition and that conforms to Western scientific norms. As a result of these factors, scientists from non-Western countries are less likely to be nominated for and awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is a significant problem, as it perpetuates the underrepresentation of non-Western scientists in the field of physics. Here are some specific examples of the Nobel Prize in Physics bias towards the WEST- Jagdish Chandra Bose (1858-1937) was a Bengali polymath who made significant contributions to physics, biology, and chemistry. He is considered to be the father of radio science and plant physiology in India. However, his work was largely ignored by the Nobel Committee. Meghnad Saha (1893-1956): Saha was an Indian astrophysicist who made significant contributions to the understanding of stellar atmospheres and the ionization of atoms and molecules. He is best known for developing the Saha equation, which describes the ionization equilibrium of a gas. Saha was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics six times, but never won. Francis Kofi Ampenyin Allotey (1932-2012): Allotey was a Ghanaian physicist who made significant contributions to the understanding of plasma physics and nuclear fusion. He is best known for developing the Allotey formula, which describes the energy loss of electrons in a plasma. Allotey was a visiting scientist at several prestigious institutions, including the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics.
