It’s cuz it’s acc the time spent on/in the paper/water but we don’t need to know that. So say in chromatography when an ink sample moves slower up the paper it’s cuz it spent longer in the stationary phase (attached to the paper) than in the mobile phase (in the water). Not sure if that makes sense but I’m sure we don’t need to know that and we just need to know what it’s called. Sorry if I’ve confused u
