Do you think you could do Don't Get Around Much Anymore by Duke Ellington in C Major. It's a great song, especially with Ella Fitzgerald singing over it. A backing track would help me with my improv so much. Thank you for putting out this kind of content.

I'm 66 years old and have played AT bass for a long time. I have recently been asked to join in a quartet of seasoned musicians to work a few holiday parties. I was introduced to the "Real Book" series and it is a difficult task with scores alone. Your backing tracks are saving me as I prepare. I enjoy reading the questions and answers that some present to you. Thank you for a job well done. %

Sure : Dm6 is more resolutive than Dm7, and more used in 30's and 40's jazz. More dissonant, but more resolutive. You can play both, but I prefer Dm6.

C Major, you can use your C Major scale thru most of the piece; although, there are some chords you must consider play with it´s own scales: A7 (A Mixolidyan), E7 (E Mixolydian).

When playing a jazz chart, it is just a framework and meant to be embellished with more interesting chords. Especially the V (5) chord. You hardly ever hear a straight dominant 7 in jazz.

May I ask in which key it is? Is it in Cmaj? ....and when you play for example that C6 chord, is that an inversion in that second bar? Answer please.
@aus10706 жыл бұрын
Well, it's initially in C major, but with lots of alterations like the E7, A7, D7, and Fm7. To solo over this you would outline the chords with corresponding scales and arpeggios. As far as C6 goes it is the same as a C7 seven chord, but instead of a 7th, there is a 6th. The notes would be C, E, G, and A. Over this chord you could play C major but you could also play C Mixolydian or whatever sounds good to you. Hopfully this helps!
@xlfc6 жыл бұрын
Nice, thanks for the answer :-) But you've answered just the first half of my question :-D the second half was about that C6 chord (for example) - if it's an inversion in that second bar or what? Cause' it sounds different than in the first bar... By inversion I mean: C6 = C, E, G, A, first inversion = E, G, A, C, etc...
@itswoodyonbass6 жыл бұрын
Sorry this is a bit late but it still holds. The second chord is less of an inversion and more of just a little flourish. He just moves up from the G at the top of the chord to an A, two frets above, and plays the E below it. So it's a "chord" of just E and A, which is just the two chord tones (3rd and 6th) of the C6 chord. You could say it's a skeleton chord, like a rootless inversion. The bass however plays an A on beat 1, which hints at the chord of A7 (ACEG) which, being the dominant chord of D major, leads nicely into the D7 on bar 3. Overall it's a really nicely put together track.

in Jazz we play over the changes, that means u need change scales in some points of progression. The primary and essential thing is learn all arpeggios of all chords you playing, and them play the arpeggios in the right momments and change in the right momment using the right arppegio and using target notes are good too, for example use the 3rd of each chord to start the phrasing , (its not mandatory but it helps to make your line make sense), after you know all the basic arppegios start add some notes from the scales of each chord, for example in Dm7 u can play Dm7 Doric ( C Major scale) and use this knowledge to all chords, enjoy and have fun :)

In 2.16 with D7 for example. An altered scale would be much better there. When i read it i read a regular D7 mixolydian instead.
@viktorolofsson19227 жыл бұрын
2.30 You have altered again and it stands A7.
@guitareimprovisation7 жыл бұрын
Ha, ok... All the 7 chords are altered, you don't have to write it in the chart (otherwise it would be impossible to read) and it's comping choice. To notice it you have to hear and adapt your playing (in a band it usually works the other way of course)
@guitareimprovisation7 жыл бұрын
Lol, "altered scale would be better" ? Do you have a good experience in comping, and did you transcribe many compings and solos before saying that ? I think you should ask questions instead of afffirming things in such a way, you'll progress much faster.
