Hey Tom. I've really enjoyed your content recently. I agree with you about Hitchhikers, I also read it and did not think it was funny. Marvin the robot with depression was the only thing in the whole book I thought was kinda funny. Otherwise, I just don't get what's good about it. Also I read Dune Messiah recently and loved it, so I hope you continue that series.

I think there’s enough of a timeskip between dune and dune messiah that you’re okay to jump into messiah after getting a short recap (especially if you’ve seen the recent films) The book sets up everything you need to know going in If you feel like you need that reread experience though consider the Simon Vance/full cast audiobook it’s really exceptional

Fires of Vengeance was a big step up for me with that series! The audio is dynamite, so if you eventually want to reread bk 1 before continuing if the next books start coming out then that could be an awesome way to experience it. I also DNFed the Witcher series after bk 1. Cool vid!

Finally someone else said it! The Witcher series, not worth continuing! I just finished Lady of the Lake and omg is the ending terrible. I highly encourage you to stop where you are and just make up your own ending, it will be better. Trust me. That being said I am still going to read Season of Storms in hopes that it returns to what made The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny so good. I'll report back lol. I'm also on the fence with Dune. I'm about to finish the first book, but for some reason I think the story works better as a movie. Blasphemy I know. I've got about 150 pages left of the first book, we'll see how I feel at the end.

I'm sooo on board with you regarding Hitchhikers! 🙌 I found nothing funny about the book as well. Binti similarly was a letdown. I will likely read everything by McCarthy. I hear you about Murderbot, I'm enjoying the books but starting to think that there is a lack of growth. It's just more of the same. But, for now, at least I'm continuing. On the other hand, I will definietly be reading book 3&4 in the Hyperion cantos. I loved The Fall of Hyperion.

One thing you can do instead of re-read Dune is to watch the new Dune Part I and Part II (Part II in theaters or when it comes out on HBO, which shouldn't be too far away). They are GREAT adaptations of the book, and they are fantastic movies. Great accurate cast, spectacular cinematography etc. They do have a few changes, but it should be enough either way. When it comes to the books, the next two books (Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) are part of the first Trilogy in dune. So Children of dune is a fine stopping point. However, God Emperor of Dune is a standalone, and I've heard very mixed opinions on it. Some say it's better than the original Dune, some say it's horrible ... They say you need to wrap your mind around some unconventional ideas. I still haven't read that one myself, but I will read it one day. I have however read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, and they were not disappointing to me. I think they were a more challenging read than Dune, because they are more political, and the action isn't as powerful as in Dune. But they both are great to finish. As a whole, they're spectacular books in my honest opinion.

New here, but glad I found your channel becuase I love the vibe! Totally with you on Murderbot and Rage of Dragons, unfortunately. Though I do think you'll be sorely missing out if you quit Bound of the Broken, it gets soooo good and those chunker read incredibly fast. Battling Stormlight for me on my faves list! Also interesting to hear about The Witcher and it maybe having to do with translation, because everyone I know who has read the Dutch translation has loved the story, but most people who read it in English seem to struggle a lot. I think you might be onto something! Whichever series you end up continuing, I hope all your reads bring you lots of joy! Cheers ;)

I read dune when I was 12 and my older brother has a mass market paperback (I’m nowhere near 13 now, lol), and since then I’ve read every single book. I think you have to be in the right mindset and disconnected from the film to enjoy the book. I’ve only read the first murderbot novella and I related to murderbot (I’m on the spectrum) but I never continued the series. I wish I liked jay kristoffs writing more, I haven’t even given his vampire series a chance :/ I think we have really different tastes but I like your perspectives:) subbing now:)

I think I would need to take some time between watching the moives and reading more of Dune. The few 4ish Murderbot books are great I just really had issues with the most recent release. I have only read Kristoffs vampire books so its hard for me to comment on his other series. However, I know people who absolutely had Nevernight and love Empire of the Vampire.

I also read The Fall first, which i think somewhat set up unfair expectations regarding pacing but i DNFed the series 100 pages into the 2nd novel. Found the writing rather dull and couldn't have cared less about the characters. I'm hesitant to continue Stormlight Archive, I've found outside of Stormlight the Cosmere is a huge miss with me and I've since soured on Sanderson's writing, and the parts i don't like about his writing, repetitive explanations of the magic system, humour etc. i have I've heard he's only tripled down on.

If you are going to continue with Dune, you need to read Messiah and Children back to back. Books 4 5 & 6 are kind of iffy from what I hear. 2 & 3 could almost be considered one book, which is probably why the sci-fi channel combined them when making their miniseries adaptation. Happy reading.
