Matt, what a great concept for a video. Meeting up with a builder that can show how they have enhanced their practices and benefitted from the Build Show. And Adam, what a phenomenal execution. It all gets covered up, but you built it as though it will be displayed in a museum. Great job.

I feel like this builder's journey exactly describes my own. I spent 2 years watching everything. As a first time owner builder, I just started laying my foundation this week and even created a manual of Matt's greatest hits. To my surprise, the old school subs have even been super receptive. We're all learning and building better. Thanks Matt. My build is in Charlotte, if you're in the area anytime over next 18months, would love to do a similar walkthrough. (We are building 4 more family homes on the same 50 acres lot!)

Wow, there is still hope for the building industry! It’s great to see someone that is actually interested in building well. Most builders I see today are only interested in building the cheapest thing they can throw up, and they act like minimum code is such an unnecessary burden on them. I’ve tried to educate a friend of mine that a builder here just outside Chattanooga but he always uses the excuse that he can’t do that because nobody else does and he has to compete. I like the boric acid trick, I did something like that a few years ago. My daughter and son in law bought a big house and the home inspector failed to notice the smell and damage in the attic from a major infestation of mice, squirrels, raccoons, etc. the previous owner had the access points for the larger animals repaired and covered up the mess with a new layer of fiberglass insulation but never dealt with the mice. We eliminated the mice and repaired all the places they were getting in then completely gutted the attic. When we put it back together we used blown in cellulose and I had him sprinkle borax powder into the hopper of the blower while were installing it.

You have helped me, someone who builds/remodels now and then, and new builders. Something to really be proud of. I've completely changed my opinion about a ton of things and baking in those costs for Zip and other things into my upcoming build.. I'm a BSEE (Elec Engineer in Comp Science) and have worked in IT for the last 30yrs, I love building new things with my hands and getting away from the screen. That is a testament to Matts impact on the industry at large and to the individual builder. There’s no secret sauce here, just informed decisions and intentional design elements to meet a performance standard. I love that you give context to the reason for these kind of improvements to traditional framing. Some apply other places, some don’t, but it’s the exercise of determining the application and performance you desire and making the building work for you (your customer) or future generations. I love this whole video.

Someone should really come up with a nail gun that automatically deposits a bead of caulking. Filling up the nail holes after the fact is a lot of work and you’re probably gonna miss some. Having a nail gun that just automatically seals after you shoot would be a huge win, also keeps the nail from corroding. Someone build this :)

Matt, I've got a really cool idea, I have no idea if it's even possible or if its been done before. But I'm buying my first house at 22, and it's an older home that is currently still rather water proof *knock on wood* a roof replacement and likely siding replacement are going to be needed within the next 5-10 years. I was thinking of doing both at the same time, and using my own time and labor and that of friends, do all the demolition, and put up new sheathing, and potentially redo rafter tails as the current ones are rotting at the ends. BUT The question is, as I'm tearing out the old siding and maybe old sheathing, would it be possible to remove all the old (likely batted) insulation from the interior walls, and spray closed cell foam, then put new Zip System up on the exterior, and then do the roof and siding? Or does spray insulation have to be done from the inside?

I'm remodeling my entire house and I am planned to rip off the old siding, plus the blue foam board and fake brick tar siding shoved underneath. I'm planning on taking off all the old boards and replace them with zip boards (unless it is better to keep them under the zip but it seems superfluous). My endgame is having a Nova Brik siding; Is it okay to nail battens to the zip sheathing? Should I seal the batten impact points and seems? Before the Nova Brik is screwed on and setup, do I have to put insulation (I'd use rockwool) between the battens onto the green zip? Do I have to put anything at all on the green zip before installing the Nova Brik? The Nova Brik works well with the inside being an open cavity. Thank you.

Again. I love the AC system. BUT there are issues with multiple thermostats in the same space. I don’t build homes but I manage lots of commercial refrigeration spaces for produce and ice cream. Here’s what’s going to happen: if all thermostats are set to same temp. Do they all turn in simultaneously? What if the load was very small and the units turning on make that very quickly. Short cycle. So then you step the thermostats. Problem here is one units runs all the time and they don’t rotate between “lead” units. I know these technologies on paper are blowing the minds of home builders. It does me too. But I think we’re going to see issues with how these complex systems are going to be “controlled”
@hamsickle1
@hamsickle1 3 жыл бұрын
a fix for this is to have sensors in the different zones and have those thermostats run based off the sensor and not the thermostat itself.
@thepeachfarmer
@thepeachfarmer 3 жыл бұрын
@@hamsickle1 what then happens if the "zoned" units are located in the same room? Do both units turn on simultaneously? Would one unit tend to turn on before the other? I had this problem in a cooler. One unit was running all the time and the other never flipped on. The question becomes do you want them to turn on together or would you prefer one to turn on for a time period and if it can't make up the load, we then bring the other unit on?
@thepeachfarmer
@thepeachfarmer 3 жыл бұрын
@@hamsickle1 So issues with this mean the temp probes might not be exactly calibrated together. If temp probes are not located in the same location then one temp probe could be near a door (the case in my cooler problem). Another issue is the air handler also helps to "mix" the air across a single zone so if one never runs, you end up with hot spots and cold spots. I just see the need here for a single controller for a single room with multiple "smart" air handlers that need to be controlled by a single temperature probe with some time delays or special fan controls to properly mix the air and prevent short cycling or overuse of a single unit. I haven't seen that yet. I've just seen HVAC guys really excited about not running duct work (understandably). Throwing cassettes and wall units around the building. Then you end up with one of those units pulling the weight. It works if the individual units are set to operate in an area where there is limited "cross-zone" mixing. It poses problems when individual units are trying to climate control a continuous space. As in the case of the retail area in the above video

You mean aside from the toxic nature of spray foam? Or the longevity of the product? Or it’s ability to trap moisture in your wood? Or that it’s not environmentally friendly? The only thing it has going for itself is the R value, but insulation isn’t just about R values but also thermal mass. I’m excited for the future of insulation which is wood fiber insulation.
