Two big American stars came from IndyCar as a result of the CART/IRL split. One was Tony Stewart, who is more well known for his NASCAR exploits. The less appreciated driver was Sam Hornish Jr., who in my opinion is the second best American driver in open-wheel in the 21st century (behind Josef Newgarden). In just 7 years of full-time racing, Hornish racked up 19 wins and 3 championships across 2 teams (Panther Racing and Team Penske). He also proved himself to be capable in close situations, as he won 11 of the top 100 closest finishes in IndyCar (including the third closest Indy 500).
