One thing I ADORE about this game are the recurring NPCs. Not just bosses like Croco, but characters like Raz and Raini. You meet them at the start of the game in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Raz tells you they're getting married, Find out SOMEONE has a honeymoon reservation at Yo'ster island, and then you meet them later in Marrymore when you're chasing down Booster. There's also the now-grown tadpole in Seaside town. You also have the wishes on Star Hill where you can tell EXACTLY who made what wish (If you've been paying attention to the NPC's Dialogue). It makes this world feel like a real place with real people, and I'm all for it.

Hell yes. I'm still at the beginning, but it's just like i remembered it, but graphically upgraded. I do like that the once permanently missable hidden ? is actually not permanently missable anymore. and I don't remember if there was a ring that'd tell you if there were hidden ? in the original...that's a nice addition. The only thing that's getting me, is I feel like they've changed the way timed attacks/defense works...I'm not getting constant attacks/blocks like I did in the original. My timing seems to be off 50% of the time....or maybe since I've played M&L more, I'm used to that system. I also forgot jumping on or trying to hit enemies on the overworld doesn't work like it does in M&L, and doesn't give you pre-emptive attacks/damage like in M&L. I kept jumping on enemies hoping to get free strikes, lol

Oh wow you're the first person I've encountered who talked about the missable box because I have been wondering about that and how so many players are gonna be pissed off when they find out they missed it just like I was in the 90s when that happened to me. And YES the signal ring was in the original, I remember vividly because that's how I discovered I missed a permanently missable box because the ring would make a sound in that room and I spent like an hour jumping around trying to find it and going insane wondering why the signal ring is making a sound but I can't find a box. It was easily the worst part of this game. Super unfair. So what did they change to make it un-missable now?

@BlindMelonLord11 ай бұрын
yeah, but the only reason they were called that in the first place, was because it was only one localization person at the time. As you could see in the original script, he mostly stuck with the Japanese names. We all know that Bowser’s name in Japan is Koopa, hence why it was called the Koopa troop. So having his name be Bowser, and having it be called the Koopa troop is a little off. So to me, Bowser’s minions does make more sense.

this game was always considered a beginners rpg back then. It was released in a time JRPGS weren't as huge as PS1 would make them be a few years later so Square really went barebones with this game, no reason to go overcomplicated with other company's IP. It's a good game though, and people who never played it should give it a try. It's a lot of fun.
@mrdocena8082 Жыл бұрын
The thing that's always bugged me with the whole "Beginner's RPG" is that people believe that its simplistic story, un-complicated battle system, no odd synthesizing side systems, no grinding quirks, etc == Baby's RPG. If that's the case, then Zeldas are "Beginner's Adventures" and Checkers is "Beginner's Chess" (I don't even like checkers and I love chess, but even I know that idea is completely biased). That's like saying Dragon Quests are "Beginner Final Fantasies" (say that in Japan and you'll get glared at - since DQ is more popular over there than FF). It's like saying a simple, basic layout of a room is a "Beginner's Save-Spacing Modular Room". It's like saying that black coffee is "Beginner's Latte". Simplicity is its own style, it has its own pace, and it caters to its own audience. A City Bike is not a "Beginner's BMX Bike". It's a city bike. It's good enough for the city and it looks nice for the city. In the same way, simple RPGs are not "Beginner's RPGs". They're simple, fun, and a good time. The same audiences who adore these games don't enjoy the Final Fantasy games not because they've never played them: But because Final Fantasy's story-telling and combat mechanics don't particularly give them a good time. I, myself, have played Final Fantasy (1), 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, X, X-II, 13, and 14. Crystal Chronicles, Crystal Chronicles Spin-Offs (King & Dark Lord), and whatever that Crystal Chronicles game was on the 3DS (or was it DS??). Do I love any of them? .... ehhh... It's not to say I didn't have good memories with them. It's not to say I didn't enjoy their stories, their music, their characters... [weirdly enough, I have really fond memories of FF5] But I genuinely adored my adventures within Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG more. And that's not nostalgia talking, because those WEREN'T my first RPGs. I just enjoy the simpler, more silly, more at-home atmospheres, more Saturday-morning-cartoon adventures -- over the extremely-deep things. Is it because I'm not a deep thinker? The opposite. I spend too much time overthinking things, being overly critical, and touching upon cynicism on a daily basis. So the happier, simpler things make my day more and are far more compelling for me. Something like Nier Automata is like a firework in my books - stunning at first glance, but easily forgotten. Where something like Skyward Sword is a cherished gem - never fading from my memory. People don't like to admit it: but I'm not the only one like this. There's a reason why SMRPG is so beloved, when other games have come and gone (including Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games). It's not just a lot of people's "first RPG"s. It's also people's first, and sadly: practically ONLY simple, fun-loving RPG adventure (with some dark, realistic tones) they've played. Nostalgia isn't what people want back. It's unpandering, unregulated, untwisted innocence. The uncomplications. The simple, yet soul-crushing philosophies (what cynical people call "naive hope", what old people call "remembering what matters"). The joy of life. The fun of adventure. People want to play games as if they were games again. Not a purpose, not a drug, not an inspiration, not an escape. But a game. For people like those, SMRPG reigns at the top of RPGs.

It's far too easy. Most attacks by enemies do little to no damage, even without blocking. I don't ever take any HP upgrades because it wouldn't make a difference at all whether he did or not, and I rarely ever have to do anything in battles other than basic attacks and the occasional Mallow Thunderbolt; even healing is almost completely unnecessary between mushroom boxes and level ups (and low enemy damage). I enjoyed the original when I played it all those years ago, and the updated visuals and music are nice, but the fact that battles just completely feel like chores because using skills just makes them take longer is making this feel like more of a slog where I'm just going through the motions more than anything else. There are some quality of life upgrades, like switching out party members mid-battle, but the other changes they made, like the chain system, super guard, and triple moves, just makes it easier than it already was. EDIT: I just want to add that my friend just fought Johnny. He beat him in two turns and took zero damage. He hasn't been grinding levels or doing anything above normal gameplay.

Super, Mario RPG is fantastic and my only real complete is the frame rate why why 30 FPS when they could’ve done 60 on this comfortably if Super Mario won that can be 60 FPS then there’s no reason why this can’t have been over that it’s a great game.

@@chrisofstarsI mean, having to bar yourself from using the game mechanics to give some semblance of a challenge isn't ideal. Far from it
@iliya1933 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisofstars Honestly doesn't change much. Triple attacks are infrequent enough that all they do is make you win some regular battles about 5 or 10 seconds faster than you normally would. I don't even use switching because there's no reason to. My characters are pretty much never low in HP enough to swap to a healer or to swap out just to prevent them from dying. And remember when I mentioned my friend beat Johnny in two turns? No triple attacks or switching were involved.

Mario RPG basically defined the modern interpretations of the Mario characters more than any other game up to that point. It cemented Bowser as a bumbling punch-card villain who has a secret soft side and cares more about his pride and ego than he does about defeating his nemesis. Without this game you probably don’t get Jack Black’s Bowser, you certainly don’t get Paper Bowser or Bowser’s Inside Story, even his role in some spinoff titles might not be the same given that before RPG he had really only appeared in Mario Kart and that was an experiment. It cemented the idea of Mario communicating less with words than Chaplin-esque physical comedy routines which the Mario & Luigi series would take even further. It gave Peach a personality outside of being the goal at the end of the game and paved the way for her more confident heroic appearances in recent years. It cemented the idea that the Mushroom Kingdom was populated with a variety of mushroom people aside from Toad and the mushroom retainers and I believe was even the first game to depict them with different colored spots. It even brought back the hammer as a recognizable weapon for Mario, something he hadn’t used since the Donkey Kong Arcade game but is now considered nearly as iconic as jumping and fireballs. It’s such an important and iconic game and I am so so so happy that it’s finally getting the love and attention it deserves after so many years in obscurity thanks to it’s weird development history.

Really the ONLY thing I have a bit of aproblem with is theses game getting remakes but sell as expensive as original titles. Over here regular games are 79.99, TOTK was 89.99, but something like SMRPG remake, Advanced Wars etc. that they remake should be like 69.99$ IMO but... you know we'll still buy it lol

I do like this game, but so far it’s proving to be too darn easy. The shockwave effect off of perfect timed attacks and not taking damage from enemies with perfect blocks alone make it so that I rarely have to use special attacks and items for HP and FP.

All of the "unique" characters such as Geno and Mallow of Mario RPG are licensed to Square. I believe that's the only reason why they won't return until negotiations

It's no remake, if anything this is a remaster. A remake has some innovation &/or changes to improve or at least expand the original to be on par with its sequels, such as rewriting the plot or changing core mechanics. A remaster is just a port with quality of life changes &/or updating graphics and sound, such as bug fixes or cleaning up menu interactions or smoothing animations out.
@Connor171998 ай бұрын
That's not true. If you completely reshoot a movie but make each shot 1:1 then it's still a remake. Same applies here. I mean the last of us remake is basically a complete copy and seems pointless to me but it factually is a remake
@XperimentorEES8 ай бұрын
@@Connor17199 Compare and contrast the following trilogy: The Thing from Another World (1951) Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) Heijningen's "The Thing" (2011) Watch all three back to back and then see if you can explain what's the difference between recontextualize remake and remaster. Adding extra animations and changing the artstyle isn't changing the core gameplay nor story elements of smrpg, if anything it's like the pokemon diamond & pearl 'remakes' instead of the red & green ones. However adding splash damage is a notable change, but making the game easy to the point of removing all challenge isn't satisfying game design, and at that point may as well just look up all the cutscenes and save yourself the time of the repetitive combat.

Unpopular opinion: I played the OG game in '96, after going through FF3 (but really FF6, yeah yeah yeah...) and Chrono Trigger, and right before Earthbound. I LOVE all 3 of those games, but I despise SMRPG. The battle theme alone makes me want to pour bleach on my brain to this day. That said, I know many people love it, so I am happy that Nintendo has brought it to those wanting it. I am posting this not to be an ass but to let folks know that, if you don't click with it, you're not alone.

I don't get the pour bleach part but a big reason I love this game is it's one of the first RPGs I played period.Playing final fantasy after that was pretty tough because the battle system wasn't as fun and there were no timed hits. Nowadays I love every RPG but Mario RPG still is my favorite of all time because of it's replay value.Once I finish an RPG I'm done most RPGs get one playthrough from but Mario RPG I have gotten dozens out of. If you grew up on more complex RPGs and decided to play this one I could understand why you would be disappointed.This game is a babys first RPG even down to the story.

You cannot go wrong with Mario & Square-Enix. I never played the original 27 years ago but this looks kool and I want it. Both companies have great track records. Trying to decide if I should wait for Xmas or something. I have played almost all Switch exclusives. Currently I am playing Fire Emblem Engage but I only play it a little every few days. I am like 25% done. Fire Emblem 3 Houses the previous entry was definitely better.

Haven't watched the video but a remaster of a game that old shouldn't be 60 dollars imo you should just buy nintendo online + bc you can play the older version of the game and alot of other older games also I feel keeping the looks of the characters but making them HD models makes them look a little stupid it's the same reason I didn't like the chibi characters in brilliant diamond and shining pearl tho if your pockets are deep enough and you really want the remastered version nothing is stopping you.

I love, love, love this game. My childhood memories of playing the original are some of my best. However, I'm going to say it: the remake is too easy. The additional damage from chain bonus, AoE damage, etc. makes some of the bosses a total pushover. It's a little disappointing and takes away from the epic feel they used to have. I realize I'm a much older, more experience gamer now.. but I still feel like they've made it almost boring to play through some of the combat. Despite that, everything else of the game is 10/10.

Im late to the conversation and maybe no one will read it but… I am currently playing the game, a few hours in, and i dont know if im enjoying it greatly. It is fun and everything but here is my take on the remake thing. I like collecting games as far as my budget allows me to, and even though i have a snes its far too expensive to get the OG game. So trying to have that original experience i bought it on my wii u. I never played it and when this came out, and saw the reviews, i bought it thinking it may be a better alternative. Regardless after playing it, it feels old to me. It is expected ig, but i dont like having the fancy graphics to enjoy a game that feels not modern. Of course its just a remake and it is appreciated that they left the original style almost untouched to keep it that way. But for me, i enjoy playing classic games on their classic graphics and everything. So i think i will go back to play the wii u version so i can appreciate it as it was made and feel that im playing a retro game and therefore its going to feel old but thats ok. I dont know if im making sense of myself but as an example… i havent played re4, and i may be inclined to play the remake because its the same story but modernized, on the other hand, if they had just slapped better graphics to the old game it feels weird and more like a fan remastered version. So if that would’ve have been the case i would play re4 like it originally was maybe with one of the remasters that just touched up the graphics. Again i dont know if im making sense, or if im not alone in this situation. So in conclusion i appreciate the graphics and it looks beautiful, but for me it does feel old and for that i think i prefer the old version and just appreciate it as is with its og soundtrack and og graphics. I think i would only jump back to this version if i end up in love with the game and then i will appreciate the graphics and stuff a bit more just to compare.
