Let me fill in a few of the details on this song: Bono wrote "Sweetest Thing" as a belated birthday present to his wife, Ali, after she turned 25. On her birthday (March 23) in 1986, he was working on recording The Joshua Tree album and noticed she wasn't speaking to him. He later realized why: he forgot her birthday. To make up for it, he wrote her this song, which isn't all lovey dovey but paints a realistic portrait of their love, which can be stormy at times but is ultimately the sweetest thing. When Bono gave this song to Ali, she asked if that included the proceeds from it as well. It did, so she directed all earnings from the song to one of her favorite charities: Chernobyl Children International.

This U2 video was filmed in Dublin City where all of the band are from.The dancers are traditional Irish dancers and I know you would love ‘Riverdance’ from the 1994 Eurovision [ the event where ABBA broke onto the world stage with their winning song‘Waterloo” 20 years before . ‘Riverdance’ was the intermission entertainment in 1994 and against all expectations it blew everybody away that night especially as the intermission act at Eurovision’ up to that point was a bit of a necessary filler-in yawn fest after the performances and before the nail biting vote tallies came in from all over Europe. This was in a class of it’s own with music especially composed for the event by Bill Whelan with beautiful ‘ Enya’ like vocals and phenomenal Irish traditional dancing that was both authentic to the tradition but mingled in with touches of Flamenco and theatrical flare .It and the company led by the dancers Michael Flattley and Jean Butler became a worldwide phenomenon performing to sellout audiences all over the world and its still going strong. I know how you guys love the ethereal voices of Enya, Kate Bush [Irish Mom] Sineàd O Connor and Dolores O Riordan so you’ll adore this mystical spell binding masterpiece .Enjoy whenever you get to see it xxx

I don't know. It seems like there's so much backstory with that one that won't be understood or appreciated. Yes, it nearly ruined the band but instead got them noticed, but that's not apparent in the video. I think "Bad" from Rattle and Hum might be a better choice (I once heard it played on a Salt Lake City alternative music station and the DJ called it "the best 8 minutes in radio"). But I totally agree they should check out some live versions of U2's songs. You only get half the band from their videos (most of which aren't very good - "Sweetest Thing" is one of the best). U2 really shines when they're live.
@hilzabub Жыл бұрын
@@jgreen6772 I don't know - I think the energy of the moment really comes through in that performance. In my opinion, U2 is one of the Top 5 bands in music history. I honestly feel sorry for younger people today that are not very familiar with U2’s music. When I think of comparing a contemporary “artist” like Olivia Rodrigo or Selena Gomez to U2, I can only role my eyes. In fact most top 80s (and 90s too) artists are on a much higher level of creativity and sound compared with most artists of today, many of whom can’t even play a musical instrument.

@@gdoggatl True. The sad truth is…..there are lots of people who can sing karaoke, but a REAL music artist is someone who CREATES an original song through writing and the playing of musical instruments to produce unique sounds like the ones we heard from the 80s. Many of these performers today have nearly everything produced for them so all they have to do is sing. We have too many “manufactured” “artists” today.

The dark-haired lady giving Bono the annoyed look is actually Bono's wife Ali. This song was originally written as an apology for missing her birthday because the band were so locked into recording The Joshua Tree, and he missed the party. I'm glad you picked the video version. This is actually a re-record of the song that the band cut in 1998 for their first greatest hits compilation. The original version from 1987 is actually available to hear: it's on disc 2 of the Anniversary Edition of The Joshua Tree, which has all the B-sides and outtakes, and it is FREAKING TERRIBLE: Bono's voice is not in tune (no Auto-Tune back then...) and completely shredded. Good rule of thumb: do not record with a sore throat. It's just bad. This one, on the other hand? I love. My girlfriend in college and I? This was our song: I was the blue-eyed boy, and she was the brown-eyed girl. Relationship didn't last, but this still makes me smile.

Another little thing you won’t know as you’ve not listened to them yet. The 5 boys in white shirts are a band called Boyzone. They have now split as they were a late 1980-1990’s band and they suffered a tragedy when Stephen Gately suddenly passed away at just 33 in 2009, it was an undiagnosed heart condition that killed him…… 💔💔😭😭. That aside you should check them out too. Gave It All Away is a masterpiece and the video is powerfully tragic, heartbreaking, sad, devastating & shows the connection that Ronan, Mikey, Shane & Keith had to Stephen. In the video it shows them writing the letter to Stephen that they wish they could have said in person and the power in seeing those 4 young men grieving for their lost brother & bandmate is just shattering to watch. It’s also the last vocal that Stephen put down for a potential album that he was working on. The album is called Brother and was one of only 3 albums they did without Stephen & then called it a day. They are working independently and doing well for themselves. Other tracks worth listening to A Different Beat, Better, Dream, Love Me For A Reason, Picture Of You, Words, Baby, Can I Hold You, Father & Son and finally You Needed Me

This was in your lifetime, Rob Squad! It was 1999. Great memories hearing this song the spring of '99. I remember the radio at this time had Sugar Ray "Every Morning", Blonde "Maria", and Collective Soul "Run", living in Austin, working my way through college at 27 yrs old.

Just to note, the original version of this fantastically sweet song came out in 1987, as a B side. In 1998, they re-recorded and rereleased it for their Best Of compilation.

@@jadakid6942 - Good tid-bit. I never bought any U2 albums or singles, just enjoyed them on the radio and MTV. Still surprised Rob Squad may not have heard it when they were kids in 99. But then again, I'm from the 80's and never heard of Kate Bush until these reaction channels.

@@dustinjones8887 Yeah some these songs are so etched in my brain and have such strong memories attached to them, so it’s definitely hard to imagine someone not having heard so many of them. But I love that they are discovering them now and the reactions bring those memories right back.

Check out their other songs like Mysterious Ways, Love Is Blindness, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, Throw Your Arms Around The World and Elevation. They released an LP where they experimented with different sounds -- one song was Discotheque and another was Limon. Very entertaining group out of Ireland.

My favourite part is when Larry puts the halo on Bono’s head (ie. he is an angel)at the end of the video. Soooo Bono.

Yes now on their Greatest hits , a really smooth and mellow song from U2. I think U2 and Simple Minds were two of the most powerful bands of the 80's and 90's. Check out 'Angel of Harlem' by U2 and 'See the Lights ' by Simple Minds-Colin Ward

To add to what John Springer said below, 1:56 the white banner with "im ........sorry!" followed by another one with "Im really sorry" on,then the "im really really sorry",is those direct apologetic messages to his wife,for forgetting her birthday. I have heard other U2 supporters say "We cant even compete with this guy! If we forget our lady`s birthday,there is no way we can have the same things arranged" Thats *EDIT* Boyzone btw who joined the music video,an all Irish boyband who were pretty popular back in the day. I have a feeling some of those firemen were male str*ppers hired in,for her enjoyment. He went overboard with this one! I am so sorry for writing Westlife first,i got them mixed up with Boyzone lol. My brain synced up several hours later. Boyzone is known to have produced a solo artist in Ronan Keating,he has nothing to do with Westlife lol. When im wrong,i own up to it. Boybands arent my strong suit,but even i realized that "wait,you told them the wrong name!".
