I really like how they made it easy to tell these cassettes apart by counting the black cogs. 3 black cogs - XTR 2 black ones - XT 1 black cog - SLX no black cogs - Deore Very nice when looking for new bikes and spotting where the manufacturers chose cheaper components

From my experience riding in an area with long, steep climbs, the shimano alloy cogs do not last very long at all. After the first chain, the shifting deteriorates to a similar level as other drivetrains. Part way through the second chain, the alloy cogs will start missing shifts and jam. You'll only be able to get a third chain life out of it is you are very fastidious with keeping your drivetrain clean and check your chain often. this comes from killing two XT cassettes in an 8 month period. I complained about this directly to shimano, they recommended running a smaller chainring to stay off the alloy cogs. Essentially their design philosophy is that you're not supposed to use the entire cassette. For me, that would equate to running a 28t chainring(28x39 roughly equates to my usual 34x45 gear for steady long climbs). Not going to happen! the whole point of running 12spd for me is to get a larger gear for xc racing(34t-36t chainrings). I've gone back to 11spd with with zero issues.

@@TheNickbb10 Shimano does want the riders to use all the gears but most riders use the more extreme gears a lot less, so it's usually fine if they wear a bit slower. But of course everyone rides a bit differently. If you want to race XC and ride lots of long, steep climbs on the same drivetrain, that may just not be the best drivetrain for you. But it does work great for many other riders and for those more steel cogs would be unnecessary. Luckily there are other options, as mentioned here and on this channel we learned that Shimano and SRAM 12s components are pretty much completely compatible with each other to give you even more options.

Great video and thank you so much for sharing, very well executed as always. I have been watching a lot of your videos and have learned so much. I am tempted to replace my Sunrace 11-51T on my Kona with the Deore 10-51T, only because the shifting is not the best compared to shimano. The bike has the Deore RD-M6100-SGS but the sunrace is not perfect and I did watch your video on the Sunrace but unfortunately I cannot get the shifting to be perfect. The only issue with the shimano cassette is the bigger ratio spacing between cogs (gear steps) compared to the sunrace which I find great for commuting. Cheers

The slx m7100 chain doesn't seat firmly around the 12-speed cassette. There is very very little room for adjustment and everything must be perfectly set for this shimano to work w/o noise and/or chain skip. The 11-speed deore's chain sits much more firm onto a deore 11-speed cassette and is more stable and seemingly better quality, just in my experience.

@@LoveMTB yeah absolutely. For embt you probably don't need over 42t (or at least I never thought I needed more when I had an ebike, no matter how steep it got), i just mentioned it because shimano say themselves it's really good with emtb because of the hg+ shifting is so great under load. So they really ought to make a 45t steel deore option available, for the eebs, although personally I'd rather go 9 or 10 sp on eebs because of chain endurance.

I just had bad experience with Garbaruk. Ordered in Aug 2021 Garbaruk 10-52 Microspline 12 speed cassette. Has been waiting till October because they have 2 months delays. Few days ago received cassette and installed instead of stock Deore 10-51 and could not tune shifting for a several hours. Even my mechanic couldn't tune good shifting on Garbaruk cassette. We tested on new chains, chain length was according to Shimano manuals. On Deore\XT shifting is great, but on Garbaruk it didn't work. I wrote to Garbaruk support and they answered like "I’m terribly sorry to hear that, Unfortunately, we just realized that we manufactured a short batch faulty Micro Spline cassettes. We fixed the issue and will send you a new one." Ha-ha, no thanks, I don't want to continue this tune quest with new cassette, asked to refund and returned faulty cassette back. I'd better order XT 10-51, of course it's a bit heavier than 335g but it works smooth and clear as it should!

Sunrace CSMZ903 is 12s cassette 11-51 is better option than cheeper sram NX and SX cassettes because of the gear range. Sram has big gap from 42-50T/52T and because of that it is very hard to do longer climbs on 42T but too easy on 50T/52T. Sunrace has same gear range and uses standard shimano freehub body for 10 and 11s as shimano cassette and it has 46T which is perfect balance for long climbs, not too hard and not too easy.

Theres more than this difference for sure. The shifting in thw XT cassette is much much smoother than the SLX cassette. Every bike Ive tried swapping the cassette too, no matter the shifter or derailed, has a noticeably better shift with the XT cassete. We’ve now tried 3 different XT cassete bikes and have narrowed it down to the actual XT cassete being the difference in the feel. Derailers ahifter or chains did t make a difference when swapping them around. That said, SRAM 12 spee GX and SX is not in the same ballpark when it comes to being smooth.

Shimano chain with sram chainring works fine, it is just noisy when in the climbing gears. I'd spend the money to switch to shimano cranks just for the super cheap slx chainring. 12spd shimano rings work with all other group sets too.

Im using an old 11-46 10 speed shimano. Still love it, and have been looking at 12 speed for the futute. My SunRingle wheel already has a XD freehub ready to install, I dont think micro spline is available. I recently installed shimano slx 12 speed on a friends bike. I am not a fan of all the loose cogs. We ride dry desert trails and feel it is more possible over time that the wear will be more on loose cogged micro spline over one piece Sram.

@@LoveMTB I have Cube Attention SL's with the M6100 12 speed Deore set. retail price is €899,- with a Rockshox Judy air fork. If you can find one in stock for MSRP. Which is very rare with current covid cyclers and everyone jumping on the stock. Honestly it's a lot of bike to start with for the price. Problem is only the M6100 12 speed is microspline. The cheaper Deore 10 or 11 speed still use the traditional freehub ofcourse as you know. But that does make it confusing for potential buyers. As Manufacturers will use cheapskate garbage freehubs on the entry M4xxx deore stuff. But consumers see shimano Deore and think they got a bargain compared to an M6100 bike. While in the end they shot themselves in the foot. Example the Attention is €799,- with 2x10 with tourney freehub at the rear. The Attention SL has a Deore Freehub because tourney is incompatible with the 10-51 casette.

@@LoveMTB I think it felt better cause the cassette had worn in some. Maybe at that point the HG+ matters less. The stock chain was Shimano SLX. We tested this every time a diff model comes out over the years for our own knowledge and for selling to customers. We want to find a worn chain before it wears cassette too much.
