Author John Boyne's recent book, All the Broken Places, is a powerful sequel to his bestselling work, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The narrative is a devastating yet poignant account of a woman who must confront the transgressions of her past, and a present in which it is never too late for courage and redemption. In conversation with literary critic and writer Merve Emre, Boyne discusses the tragedies of the past and the inevitable shadows they cast upon the future.
John Boyne is the author of twenty-two books, including the global bestsellers The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Heart’s Invisible Furies. His most recent novel, Water, was published in November. His novels are published in sixty languages, making him the most translated Irish author of all time.
Merve Emre is the Shapiro-Silverberg Professor of Creative Writing and Criticism at Wesleyan University and the director of the Shapiro Center for Creative Writing and Criticism. Her books include Paraliterary: The Making of Bad Readers in Postwar America, The Personality Brokers, The Ferrante Letters, and The Annotated Mrs. Dalloway. She has been awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize, the Robert B. Silvers Prize for Literary Criticism, and the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing by the National Book Critics Circle. She is a contributing writer at the New Yorker.
Kevin Kelly is the Ambassador of Ireland to India. Prior to his appointment in September 2023, Ambassador Kelly was Head of Press and Communications at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. His previous appointments include Ambassador to the Netherlands, Ambassador to Uganda & Rwanda and Special Envoy of the Government of Ireland to Africa for Ireland’s UN Security Council campaign. In 2021, Ambassador Kelly was elected by the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for Victims and he still holds this position.
