My 6 year old Mac actually runs just fine today for what I do. For me Macs are about the user experience. Stuff just works, polished applications, lack of hassle etc. However I still think this a BIG step for Apple for the simple reason that there has for years been so many users obsessed with specifications. They have always gone "Well your Mac has 30% lower performance than my PC for the same price, you are being ripped off!!!" Never mind that the PC has worse track pad, worse screen, creaky cheap plastic enclosure. To a lot of people there is an obsession with specs, and this M1 Max, has just buried these people. The PC guys cannot wave specs at Mac guys anymore, because their computers are getting obliterated. Sure... they can start saying that specs don't matter because... "we got the better user experience and design"... but oops the PC doesn't have that either now. What you get is lower performance and worse user experience. The next high end Mini and iMac is going to blow the huge PC gaming rigs out of the water. If only Apple could give the gaming market a bit more love.

I used to be one of those guys… :/ it wasn’t until my friend gave me his old 2012 iMac, last year. Technically the iMac was a shrimp 🍤 compared to my gaming PC in specs. BUT I noticed I was gravitating towards using the iMac for everyday-use/school/work. Basically for anything that wasn’t gaming. It changed the way I worked, and allowed me to be more productive. I couldn’t believe it. The iMac even had a basic HDD!! (not the combo flash/disk one) I quickly figured out why the iMac and all other Apple devices performed so consistently. I needed a Mac in the first place bc I accidentally signed up for a Swift programming class… well it turns out that Apple has a bunch of wizards working in their software development teams. The code that supports the Apple ecosystem is solid, and even more polished than the devices it runs on.

To be frank, these are absolutely monstrous soc's, and deliver even more impressive performance to boot. All the while, having a feature no laptop or desktop has. HUMA(Heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access)brought in by their unified memory architecture, similar to a games console, giving both the cpu & gpu access to a uniform memory pool with the same memory bandwidth and allowing them to use it at the same time, rather than having a split memory architecture like a pc laptop which doesn't have HUMA and can only provide a fraction of the performance it should theoretically offer. These M1 chips do more than that and have headroom for so much more while requiring a fraction of the power and the result is higher battery efficiency which translates to more hours of continuous use. What Apple needs to do now is provide devkits with these soc's to game devs and bring games back to mac and these macs will have everything alongside the complete experience that a mac provides. It's bound to happen at one point, just like the migration to Apple silicon which began like a year ago.

@@Cat-kp7rl Nice sharing. It is always quite interesting how people end up on the Mac. It tends to be a bit random in my experience. I know e.g. women who bought it because they thought the design was nice, but then it was the user experience which made them stay. I basically ended with Mac about 20 years ago because of Mac OS X. I was a Linux user and loved Unix stuff but tired of configuring stuff and all the hassle. I started reading about NeXT back then and it seemed like the ultimate Unix system. I really loved Objective-C and how they build applications. Nothing was really like that back then. When I learned Mac OS X was going to be derived from NeXT, I decided I had to try Mac. That was the start of my journey. My first Mac was a G4 Cube and that just blew me away. I had never experienced anything like it on PC before. Back then PC were super ugly noisy beige boxes. This thing was a like a work of art and so quiet I thought it was broken when I powered it on. Mac OS X then had many issues. Apps launched really slowly, but the graphics was just so smooth compared to Windows and the composititioning of windows with shadows and transparencies was so smooth and beautiful that Windows really felt like it belonged to another time era. Today differences seem smaller, but then again all the downsides of Mac that existed back then are gone. The machines are much faster now and you are a first class citizens. Back then I always struggled getting hardware to work that was not made for Mac. Getting on networks as tech support, software etc was Windows oriented.

A more powerful processor reduces power utilization, it does more in less time and sleeps the rest of the time. This is also why 4g and 5g networks are better than 3g, not because we need that high network speed, but if we can download more data in less time, it saves power.

@cas curse I'm a windows user and have been since as long as i can remember. In fact i don't even own a single Apple device. But, assuming Apple isn't flat-out lying, this kind of performance per watt is unlike anything that has ever existed. The only people who will still be buying high end windows laptops are gamers, people who can't afford MacBooks and people who really *need* windows. PS. The "most powerful laptop we could find" was an MSI laptop that's like 2 inches thick and has an RTX 3080. According to apple, the M1 max is only about 10% slower than that while consuming 40% less power. And don't forget, the GPU in the M1 also share the same memory as the rest of the system which means the MacBook essentially has a 64gig GPU. I really don't think anyone in the right mind would buy a windows laptop if they can afford any of the the decently equipped MacBook pros.
@RazgovorIsDialog
@RazgovorIsDialog 2 жыл бұрын
@cas curse That's because a lot of people don't understand that the Uniform Memory Architecture in these Arm/Apple silicon chips is a very big deal. You can throw all the memory bandwidth you want at a laptop that has a split memory architecture and it'll never use it all, let alone efficiently. That's because current windows laptops as we know it, do not have a unified memory architecture, which means they'll never use the full bandwidth in an efficient manner. A big advantage of an soc with unified memory architecture like the M1 is its super low latency (as the whole cluster of ram is visible and accessible to both cpu & gpu) and latency critical applications will benefit tremendously because of it and apps optimised for that kind of architecture will use less power and less ram to achieve the same result faster. Laptops use more than 100W of power with gpus like a 3080 and i9's. These M1's have most applications now optimised for their memory architecture and just that architecture in general but they also consume like what? 30, maybe 35W. Which is unheard of in the windows laptop space, especially laptops in the same power range as the one Apple tested. When the naysayers finally understand why these apple silicon chips are in the spotlight, they might actually stop with the ignorant statements. The M1 was a marvel, these bigger siblings will continue where it left off.

Sorry to disappoint you man, but if you look outside of full gaming laptop, lots of Windows have more than 10hr of battery life. More than half of laptop released are these type of laptop, i.e business laptops, media & entertainment, even compact gaming. Full gaming laptops deliberately choose less battery life because in its usage, we're supposed to always have it plugged in and not carry it around. I think Apple right now have a huge lead over other in price to performance ratio but we can still look at a product objectively and not disparage the competitor just because we support the product we choose.
