In actual, practical use, Triple Heavy Plasmas are more effective than anything else, as they can core a ship directly, without needing to disable it first. On top of that they're a highly versatile jack of all trades weapon with relatively low ammo weight and cost. Try coring a moving OPV with any other weapon and you'll understand their individual utility a lot better, shooting at static target-blocks is not a good way to gauge weapon performance. If you have 'an idea' of where a core is in an enemy ship, Heavy Plasma will take it out, while that ship is still moving. Try any other weapon and you will be shooting at it all day. If you have to shoot out all of a ships forward thrusters, assuming the player even knew where they are, that's a ton of extra time, damage you're going to take, ammo cost, and less loot for you at the end. To understand each weapons utility, you need to use them, in actual combat.

I do believe I stated several times that you have to consider moving targets. A side point to your plasma argument though. With the explosive nature of the heavy railguns, would they not be more effective than plasma due to the increased block damage and the explosive radius? Assuming you can down enemy shields with say laser/emp turrets for example?

Nop mostly due to ghost block generated from ship mouvment its like when you try to abbord a ship after killing is reactor but invincible bloc prevent you from moving where you want they have a depop time but its long enough to block 4-6 shot depending on lot of steuf

to be fair to Railgun for attacking space Station ? 100% the best weapon bonus point for the LX due to being Very On Point for coring without damaging mutch else

I enjoyed this video. I have six of the triple laser cannons on my combat CV just for taking down shields. Shields for almost all POIs including ships go down in five seconds. The rest is a plethora of turrets. I dare not say how many. The part about taking out turrets is irrelevant to my playstyle. I turn off turrets in my targeting schema as I like them to all be intact for salvaging. My favorite targets are satellite defense stations and mining rigs, like those found near rich asteroid fields. I get around thirty-two superconductors from them. I separate my turrets into groups such as Turrets (med. artillery), Turrets (light plasma), turrets (light missile), turrets (light cannon). I find it helpful to group them for fine tuning, especially when it comes to use in space and use in both space and atmosphere.

Well, I just turn off CPU and block limits and use them all ;) Kidding aside I've never done that much with CV combat so despite playing many hours I'm a CV weapons noob. This video is much appreciated.

One thing to take in mind with the missile launchers Spanj, is that as long as you hold the mouse button when firing either the mediums or heavies they will home in on where you are pointing the cursor. So while not hitscan, my experience with them is that you rarely miss with them because of that.

yep, they're homing, but to whatever you mouse is pointed at the time so you have to stay aimed on the target the whole time right?

Great break down of weapon. One thing players have to consider in ship design though as well is ammo cost. Back in RE1 I settled on lasers for my small ship for hitting ground POIs primarily because it was super easy for me to make a ton of ammo for them. It was better to strip the shields really fast then do some damage to turret with a hit and run. Tried doing mixed setup of shield and railgun but just took longer to take shields down and they often had more time to regen so ultimately took more time and resources compared to full laser setup. Much like not having the CPU for some of the bigger guns due to lack of resources. Sometimes you don't yet have stock piles of that resource to mass produce ammo. So knowing what the alternative do is pretty handy.

dont forget also, I showcased the heavy weapons because the medium and light versions are just scaled down, so when it comes to CPU and affordability, you can use the medium/light versions instead, but of course taking into consideration they do a lot less damage

@@Spanj Actually, the medium versions differ. They fire faster and have lower blast damage when applicable. Medium and Light railguns have no splash damage like the heavy, only dealing dmage to the very block they hit. Medium and Light lasers fire projectiles with travel time instead of solid beams like the heavy, so unlike their heavy counterpart they are not hitscan. Medium missiles fire slower, and single missiles instead of triples like the Swarm. Only the cannons and plasmas behave similarly on all 3 tiers.

Heavy laser performance surprised me quite a lot. Very informative video, however you forgot to mention about the ammo they take and with weights and volume on its a bit trickier situation. Not to mention the cost of the ammo. Positron ammo takes a ridicilous amount of space btw and is costly in other terms too, but with modulated laser turrets they decimate even legacy shields.

I was running 4 positrons before switching to the rail guns. They are very useful in sniping off turrets on moving Legacy ships due to the sustained fire rate and damage.

The railgun is actually travelling projectile btw weirdly, and lasers are the actual railguns, hitscan and does its dmg on its sound effect "pyuhh" so u can just tap LMB instead for better visual view From my testing a few weeks ago in actual combat, the 6x heavy railguns are very practical for coring or killing thrusters etc, however one thing i didnt consider at the time struck me afterwards, taking down shields while using up all your heavy limit slots hurts, sure you can use modular but then u gotta get up close which means u also take more hits. The EMP cruise missiles are still the big daddy of anti shields, and after i changed my weapon loadout to 6 emp cruise missiles + medium as manual, i was able to take out opv much quicker and safer, cause their shields will be gone while mine are more or less full (emp cruise is 1.05km range and once fired u can just start backing off dodging) The manual i used for medium was all medium plasma, as the projectile speed makes for good staggered explosion coring setup, cannon from my testing was just too fast and it all hit at the same time not delivering its full potential in damage, and the rest felt lackluster too, lets not talk about railgun since the medium doesnt even have explosion to it. So just consider when you build your ship loadout to not forget that EMP cruise launchers are "Heavy".

An important consideration is whether or not a ship is meant to be specialized in a particular aspect of combat, and whether or not it's meant to be part of a multiplayer fleet. In the case of a group of friends on a server together...such as, say, the Chaos Crew...a ship outfitted exclusively with those swarm launchers could be a wildly effective support-fire vessel. Well-protected weapons on a ship at considerable range, constantly dumping a rain of Hell onto enemies en masse. Means your more dedicated direct-fire ships can shoot anywhere and easily get far more penetration with railguns or the like than they normally would. A ship with those launchers essentially turns an entire enemy vessel into one giant weak point. Plus, those swarm launchers I can see being quite effective as a defense against drones or enemy SVs. In fact...since they do triple damage against "Entities"...I'm betting that's EXACTLY what they're for...defense against drones. Beyond that...I don't see much point to different weapons aside from having something against shields...and then Railguns, for armor, I guess.

I think the best thing about the Thor railgun is the fact that it doesn't count against your maximum amount of heavy weapons. You could have max heavy rail guns and add that thing later on if you manage to get it.

An additional bonus of the rail guns is that their ammunition is very light compared to many of the other heavy weapons, a factor mentioned by other folks here too. I've been flying a ship on the server (Raven XVII) that has 6 rail guns and it completely murders everything I've encountered so far. I pair it with 10 X-ray laser turrets to rip the shields down fast, 12 infrared turrets for longer-range damage, and microwave/UV for drones etc.

This is very interesting and something I've pondered while playing on your server. Personally never used plasma. Always thought they where to expensice on CPU compared to what you get. I rather just have lasers on my auto cannons to take down shields and have my click fire weapons (cannons/railgunns) for when the shield is down. I have also had lasers for klick weapons, but most of the time i don't spend the CPU on that. Seems like I will only use railgunns in RE2. CPU managment is a bit more difficult in RE2. I do miss the beam weapons from RE1 though, the ones that continuly fired. Cheap ammo. A nightmare on lag when more then you where in the area.

I'd suggest you look at Ente's Warlord CV. He has buried the heavy missile launches - yes all six, within the ship. There is a small alley which the missiles travel out of. To me, that's the ultimate protection for that weapon. Thanks for a great video, I must second seeing actual combat testing.

Ahh. Ente is one of my FAVORITE ship builders. I've done multiple games with all kinds of different ships, tanks, sv's lol. The Tethys CV was the last game I did.... That ship was amazing.

It strikes me that with the weapon count limits and weapon specialization, it makes mixed unit tactics in multi-player a must. If you have a guild, building different special purpose ships instead of everyone having a general purpose ship would make combat much different and much more effective. Pretty much the way a real military would do it. In reality, general purpose weapons platforms usually perform much worse then a mixed group of special purpose weapons platforms.

Good video a little disappointed in the plasmas as they seem like an ideal weapon due to shield damage and hull damage, rail guns do nice damage but you really need shield busters that works fast against more powerful CV's. Could your try out PVP with the same CV (shields the same too) but different weapon loadouts. It would be fun to watch you fight some of your crew and look at what weapon loadout was the best.

Now to see you use them in actual combat against an OPV. This is nice basic testing, but against stationary blocks is rather limited. Test against something that moves and shoots back, see how the weapons will perform then.

The Thor Railgun isn't a heavy. It's its own type "experimental" Stack up with cruise missiles and heavy railcannons and plink away with it.

We need a max weapon amount and like a 1 minute dps with each. I wanna see a realistic comparison based on a fight. After all, if cannons can have 6 but something else can only have 1 then its not a good comparison for 1v1. You may not always have max weapons, but you wont deal with just 1 weapon very often if ever. I would love to see something like max fixed weapon vs ventrus where you just hit her in the nose for a minute straight. It would show spread, radius, and punch through with a decent dps test. Disagree with the swarm missile opinion. They will always go to where you aimed when firing, however, it can be blocked if the target moves too much that it is no longer visible to the missile. Like if they have a physical wing, they could turn to make you hit the wing instead. However, they will always aim and go straight for the spot. With the range, rarely do you hit somewhere else unless its a hidden component. Like a recessed engine during a turn, or a turret on the top side when they do a roll. Pvp where ships are usually more agile then the NPC's you will spread the damage a lot more though. But it will always hit them. They are my go to for target component kills against any NPC who are easy to predict. Only a true hitscan weapon would be more accurate. Even rail guns velocity is slow enough to need a decent lead to hit. Obviously a base would be better with any weapon but that heat seek is a god send for xirax and the like.

If Empyrion had conveyors or any way to sort and automate item transfers inside and between ships/bases. And if you could walk around ships in motion, it would be the best space game on the market. A game combining the strengths of Empyrion and Space Engineer would be so good!

I found through my testing that coring ships is a lot easier with plasma guns and plasma med turrets with basic laser turrets for rest with 4 chain guns for enemy sv’s

Really nice and informative video! I largely agree with your assessment there, heavy rails are really good, depending on your turrets the lasers can be better if you need anti shield firepower. Plasma are a bit 'meh'. Positrons seem to be good, but I just cannot stomach the constant reloading. Slight correction though, the heavy railgun is not hitscan. The experimental, medium and light railguns are hitscan - the heavy isn't. A hitscan weapon cannot cause explosions, due to a game limitation. So the heavy railguns gain the explosion but lose their hitscan attribute when compared with the other variants. Their projectile is really fast though. You are absolutely correct on bunkering the missile launchers. It can be very hard to keep heavy weapons alive, especially when you plan to fight on armor instead of shield. Bunkered missile launchers can be covered nearly completely in armor and are one of the few weapons where you don't run into an issue with losing them on a 'no-shield' ship. They are also absolute beasts when trying to kill thrusters to stop a ship. They do an ungodly amount of damage against thrusters, and are extremely easy to use on servers for that purpose due to their homing capabilities. Their explosion damage also helps with coring if you don't know exactly where the cores are... (even though that means they also cause more collateral damage when coring)

Seems like the new meta will be lasers and railguns for coring. I'd like to see 6 heavy railguns and all the rest being laser turrets against an OPV.

It would be Cool if the tri-gun Heavies had a secondary fire mode instead of chain fire they full fire of all 3 barrels!!! Ka-Pow 🥊💥 You would think the 3x barrel rail gun would have more penetration & less splash damage ? Cause it's just a different variation of the cannon.

You can't do that, you have to stay on the heavies so they finish reloading, if you move to lights or mediums and interrupt the reload then they won't reload, you have to let the sequence finish. It's just how the game works.

Question: how deeply can you bury the "bunkered" weapons? Can you surround them and put a blast door over the top? Theory is, you open blast doors to fire then close to protect them. Possible?

seeing as blast doors/shutters etc are just an animated block, the launchers would consider themselves blocked if placed under them

You only used 3 of the missiles you said you can have 6 of them so if you had 6 of them would it take harth the time to destroy the turrets if they do not miss

he used 1 launcher, but each launcher fires 3 with each shot. 6 launchers all firing one is a beautiful 18 fireworks launched. Its fun.

Which weapons to choose for a CV in RE2? All the heavy manual fire weapons you can possibility fit on the CV and they still won't be enough.

@steffithemad8327 if it helps: One of the things I have noticed is that RE2 is designed for much longer engagements than RE1. This can be a hard pill to swallow for some players because that means you will always walk away damaged and will lose a large amount of your ammunition. Only way to combat this is to design ships with huge reserves of ammunition, especially if you're going through combat sites where enemies are all heavily shielded ones. This will most likely include later on campaigns that may be server specific as well. So if you explore around with various ways to design ships, I'm sure you'll find some nice loadouts

@General_Turian I have about 400+ hours in RE2 so far and for the most part I am enjoying it. Loot is better in the poi's, it's easier to trade and easy to make money, I don't mind the new weapons with shield penetration, makes me play with more intelligent tactics in mind. The days of 1 ship doing everything are gone, I currently have a fleet of J Randall and Spanj creations for each task. I really don't mind having to repair often, RE2 is just a vast improvement overall and it isn't even finished yet.

I have to say i love the Demo, Would have liked to see what damage is taken Passed shields with all weapons. Because my base was nuked by 12 gat drones.. and I had 22K shield seems lack of ammo.. but They was able to pop gen without shield going down. Concreate and Steel Outter. and was 4 blocks under that base. I know shield pen is the "big new thing" but From what I have experienced with it, I would love an option to just turn that off. *RE2 with Shield pen = Experancied players* RE2 for New players No shield pen, From what I know of the files when its all said and done.. would be a good fix for the divided community, from what I have seen across media and convos on discord. shield pen is the big Downside for RE2, but for more Exp player. its another challenge :) Anyway Enjoyed the testing........ and be *still alive*.... Good Spanj ^GLaDOS...will find you lol^

The point was to make it so you cant just ignore drones anymore based on having a shield up. Gat drones don't do much damage to concrete or steel, even less through shields. I have yet to lose my base with just 1 gat turret, 1 layer of steel and 1 layer of concrete to my gen/core. Pen does not pen the whole base so something else happened, no way it got through all those blocks with only 22k shield without dropping the shield. I mean, in a hit and run fight that lasted about a hour, against a ship that was superior to mine, I dropped probably around 1000% of shields (always backed off to regen shields before drop) I still only lost 1 steel block deep on my ship, and it did not kill my visible, uncovered gens. Either you had a bug, which is empyrion and possible, or something else happened that you did not notice. No way they got through that many blocks with the shield still up. Hell, I would not expect that shield to stay up under 12 gat drones for much time.

@@alenvire Honestly not sure what happened, but I ran back the footage (steam record thingy, not YT friendly.)" and there was no damage before but gen poped and that dropped the core, but Terrain +steel+concreet and they managed it, shield never went down.. I know a bug happened because the ammo block was blank.. and there was ammo before *over 6k of 12.5 and 250 missiles..* * my point was Shield pen has caused a lot more headaches....In my experience, limited as it is Jan 24 till now. - tho I've owned since release. never played. Meh! w/e I deleted that world now anyway, since new patches since it was made, that could have factored into it as well...

@@ISG_Live I was not saying I did not believe you. I could see a scenario where a ammo box blew, or some other thing with low hps but a big bang caught your core. I just feel like there is more to what happened. I know there is a bug, that can cause damage to phase through armor blocks. It was one of the reasons people started using air gaps in armor. Pen is a good way for forcing good builds and not just skeletal shield builds or everything out of plastic. You can mod how you want. I just know something was not working as intended, or it was and just unnoticed.

I would say its a preference thing based on your skill. Your aim still matters, which means if you miss, your doing a small amount of damage to a nearby block instead. However, you can miss with plasma all day and sooner or later destroy everything you were aiming at. The big time difference is lasers are better for bases if you can sit and tank. If you have to dodge or adjust your aim, then your bound to miss and then plasma may be better.
