Just the tickets for the MET gala were $75,000 each, which is $15,000 over the average yearly income in the US as of 2023. The wealth inequality in the US has gotten way out of hand. And this event is technically classified as a charitable event but rather than give the money to the starving, homeless,or poor the money is being given to fund a COSTUME INSTITUTION. Plus I bet all of these celebrities are using the event’s classification as a charity to get a massive tax write off. I understand wanting to celebrate the arts and raise money for them so they don’t die out however the 26 million that was raised could have been used for way more important things.

Don't quite a few celebs only get to the Met Gala via getting invited/sponsored by a designer so said designers can use them as influencing cloth hangers? And the exorbitant ticket prices are paid by the people that weren't otherwise invited but still want to go? Or at least that's how I understood that. That and the Met Gala is really important for the funding of the Costume institute since they don't get much funding otherwise. Preserving historic clothes is pretty hard and also a rather neglected niche. Opening an exhibition once a year with a gala that specifically encourages creativity and artistry with designers and funding yourself from the tickets seems like a good and fitting idea all things considered.

A lot of them go for free and the dresses and jewelry is borrowed. It’s a fund raiser for the art Museum which the celebrities are helping to promote. The Met museum changed to pay what you wish general admission for the most part not long ago to make it easier for ppl to go. And a lot of Museums were having a tough time staying open bc they just werent bringing in enough money. These fundraisers help them keep their doors open. It also funds restoration and preservation of priceless works of art and educational programs. And keeps the art viewable to the public.
