Years ago I had an old Citroen ZX with a knackered gearbox which would whine in 5th at motorway speeds and sometimes try to pop out of gear. To keep it going I changed to a slightly thicker oil and added Molyslip. It solved the problem at the cost of a stiff gear change when cold, which I was happy to accept.

Its definitely good advice to loosen the transmission filler plug first, particularly on this model of MX5 as they have a reputation for going really tight over time. I have the same model and there was no way the filler was going to come out with a normal open ended spanner. I managed to special order a 14mm square section socket which fits nicely, however I then needed to go back to the parts shop to get a breaker bar with a universal joint on the end to fit around the exhaust which is right in the way! Job done - eventually!

There is a small amount of fluid that needs to be changed under the shifter as well. A quick tip on the oil change - a red Solo party cup will fit below the oil filter and is large enough to catch the oil and the filter as well. Saves a lot of cleanup (well until you convert to a remote oil filter setup).

The issue of what gearbox oil improves the notchy change in MX5s is well worn path. Some say RED LINE MT90 75W-90 GL4 is the one to go for but I've tried it and it's no better than an oil half the price. With regard to the oil filter go for K&N HP 1008. It's got the 1" nut on the top which makes undoing it tons easier.

4:24 Has that exhaust got a small hole appearing or is that the cover around the exhaust that is holed? The later 2.0lt engined ones (we've an immaculate 2010 plate MX5) has the oil filter on the other side and is a fiddly little bugger to get out without removing a cover and even then it still makes an absolute mess over the sub frame.

Matt a trick I've heard about when changing engine oil. When you remove the oil filler cap is to connect a vacuum hose to top of engine turn it on and when you remove the drain plug the oil stays in until you turn of the vacuum. Another tip from a mx5 owner is have you looked at the relocation kit for oil filter to the bulk head think mx5 parts is the go to for this. Don't forget to check the fluid levels after a bit of driving. Great stuff as always .
