I am trying to adapt to a single arm push through but I seem to have what I can only call "more confidence" when using a double arm takeoff. What I mean is that I seem to not be ready to attack the ground with a one arm action for the hop. Regarding that, I would like to inquire, should the hop consist of a continuous cycle of the hop leg? Or is it a slight patient hold the through the take off and highest part of the hop followed by the pull back into the track? P.S I see your training group, especially Sarah are looking very good going into his season. Will she be at British indoors?

Good to hear from you ... re the arm action at the hop. I would say that if you are struggling with the single arm push method, then the double can work, as long as it's done very fast as Christian Taylor does. It will potentially lead to greater balance. It's not a one-size fits all approach. I've just found that with some of the younger jumpers that they can't get their arms back quickly enough without disrupting their torso position. Re the sweep of the free leg ... i don't really have a target distance for this - rather I emphasise the swing away and out from the board and then the pull back ... so, we need to see hip extension and then the pull back and rotation. It's a bit of a "feel" thing and a judgement on my part as to the success of the drive. Hope that helps a bit. And, yes Sarah in particular is coming on very well - already jumped equal to and in excess of her PB from last year around 5 times in 2 comps. So, we should see a longer one at some point, whether this be at the trials or elsewhere we will see, but it's on the horizon. Watch this space!

How do you practice max velocity if you don't have a pit? Additionally, what is the best way to practice without a pit?
