I detest Shiyi's Mother. She is a shrew, a horrible person inside and out. Shiyi, raised among sharks has learned her lessons well, and even though her 'mother' barely tolerated her, she did match her well in marriage. Yes, it was contrived, but in the long run, Shiyi was the best choice to protect Zhun and the bonus is, it elevated Shiyi's status.

She's not her actual mother, she's the matron of the Luo family, so she has power over the household. It wouldn't have been unusual for a woman in a Chinese harem to bare animosity towards the concubines' children because she needs to maintain power over her husband and the best way to do that is to control the other women in the family. This kind of behavior would have been pretty normal back then. Interestingly it's a strong possibility that the legal wife also had the authority to choose the names of all the concubines children because with the exception of Yuanniang, her actual daughter, all the other daughters in the Luo family seem to have numbers for names. Erniang basically translates to second lady, Wuniang means fifth lady and Shiyi Niang means eleventh lady.
