To be able to pull 1,001 cars you would probably need at least 2 engines. The strongest locomotive in the world could theoretically pull 700 cars (UP gas turbine) . Though it would need a push and flat ground. And only be able to pull around 15mph. However I still love the movie and the show. I definitely believe the side rods are decoration. A rod like that would snap instantly trying to pull 1,001 cars.

Big Alice is a prototype leading to Snowpiercer, She runs off the same engine and all. But is only meant as a proof of concept, After Snowpiercer was built, Big Alice was kept as a resupply train so Snowpiercer could get stuff without needing to stop all 1,001 cars

Well, the train in the movie is actually called 'Icebreaker', while the trains in the show are called 'Snowpiercer' and 'Big Alice'. They are 3 separate trains with Alice being the oldest of the 3 since it's the (first) prototype. I'm not sure about the other 2 but I would say that Piercer is the 2nd model as the first finished product and Breaker is the 'youngest' model. That's solely judging by the aesthetics of Piercer and Breaker tho, as Breaker looks way more 'modern' and futuristic than Piercer.

As much as I like Snowpiercer, there's a pretty gaping plot hole. Every person who owns a gun would definitely go to the boarding and overrun Snowpiercer's security forces; they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I don't care how many guards Wilford hired, he's not going to outgun everyone in the US who owns a gun. This is to say nothing about the US government who would almost certainly use military force to nationalize the train and use it for its own government officials and selected citizens.

Food is grown onboard, water is recycled and possibly harvested from from snow through the front of the train, and the train itself runs off of electricity produced by a "perpetual motion engine".

Since Melanie's (who was in control of Snowpiercer) soul initiative was to save as many people as possible, she couldn't bring herself to kill off the tailies, especially after Melanie lost her daughter and parents to the freeze. As far as the guns go? That's easy. What do you think would happen if one stray bullet hit something important? The show's CW-7 is was worse than the movie's; anything in contact with the outside air freezes in seconds. In fact, one of the episode's plot is entirely centered around a stray bullet hitting essential electronics that eventually lead to the entire train nearly being derailed.

The thing about perpetual motion especially a machine at that size wouldn't start on its own so maybe the locomotive has that steam system to start the train to get it rolling. Then that system works to speed the machine up to slow it down to stop it. This would give a explanation for the driving rod the whistle the perpetual motion engine and if you want to get to practical it would have a nuclear reactor witch would create unlimited electricy and steam to controls the perpetual motion engine. It explains all the mechanical things of this locomotive how it can stop and go with eas and reverse because in order to stop and reverse that type of engine you need a outside force. It explains all of the steam parts on the engine. And it will also make that rod system a bit more then aesthetic witch in my opinion is pretty great and clever.

Spoilers: At this point it was revealed that Mr. Wilford wasn't on the train, creating a power vacuum. The Jackboot leader (Jackboots being the security forces on Snowpiercer) basically took control of the train along side a few 1st class citizens while the Tail dwellers (Tailies) were rebelling. The Tailies were winning but, the Jackboots (Snowpiercer's security forces) threatened to gas and kill everyone from the tail and many in 3rd class unless the rebel leader surrendered. The Jackboots gathered in seven cars ready to move in on the rebel-controlled cars as the rebel leader and several rebels were scheduled for execution. However, the Tailie revolt got help from some engineers that fell out of favor with the Jackboots and so they executed a plan to eject the Jackboot army into the cold and then reform the train under new leadership.

Two reasons. The tail end was for storage of certain items to keep the engine running fast and maintained. And Melanie wouldn’t allow them to uncouple them anyways cause you need the engineer to turn a key to allow access to the coupling.
