Yes it would've been very convincing. He claimed that he stalled on the project because the historical research was just too dam depressing. His wife has said the same thing.

@@deckofcards87 What settled the matter, according to Jan Harlan, was all the time spent on research. They were still in the planning stage when Spielberg's film of "Schindler's List" began production. In the same way that Kubrick's meticulous methods resulted in "Full Metal Jacket" being just another high-profile Vietnam film, he could see "Wartime Lies" coming out as just another high-profile Holocaust film. So, it ended there. A shame really, because "Wartime Lies" is a different sort of story and still worth filming.

There will never ever be another director like Kubrick. Iconsidrr him to be the greatest independent director, not so much in a financial sense but in a creative way. No studio executives were allowed on his set without permission or interfered when it came to the content of the film. Every Kubrick film was his vision, totally free of the nonsense we hear about nowadays with reshoots when a test screening goes wrong. Kubrick pandered to no one or followed any trends and never played it safe. Each film was unique, but each sharing a common theme on the flaws of humanity to grasp the bigger picture and suffering for it. His films are satires on human behaviour. The only film that has a "happy" ending (albeit ambiguous) is 2001.
