I really wish Kubrick and never canceled his Holocaust movie. With his unsettling and immersive style of filmmaking there’s no telling how disturbing of an experience that would’ve been.

Yes it would've been very convincing. He claimed that he stalled on the project because the historical research was just too dam depressing. His wife has said the same thing.
@TheStockwell
@TheStockwell 3 жыл бұрын
@@deckofcards87 What settled the matter, according to Jan Harlan, was all the time spent on research. They were still in the planning stage when Spielberg's film of "Schindler's List" began production. In the same way that Kubrick's meticulous methods resulted in "Full Metal Jacket" being just another high-profile Vietnam film, he could see "Wartime Lies" coming out as just another high-profile Holocaust film. So, it ended there. A shame really, because "Wartime Lies" is a different sort of story and still worth filming.

@@budusbusham3324 Jonathan Glazer? His film resume is awfully slight: tons of commercials and music videos but only three relatively low budget films over a twenty year period. There will never ever be another director like Kubrick. Iconsidrr him to be the greatest independent director, not so much in a financial sense but in a creative way. No studio executives were allowed on his set without permission or interfered when it came to the content of the film. Every Kubrick film was his vision, totally free of the nonsense we hear about nowadays with reshoots when a test screening goes wrong. Kubrick pandered to no one or followed any trends and never played it safe. Each film was unique, but each sharing a common theme on the flaws of humanity to grasp the bigger picture and suffering for it. His films are satires on human behaviour. The only film that has a "happy" ending (albeit ambiguous) is 2001.

Kubrick was holding the diffusion for the lamp that was taped to the operator's chest. I REPEAT! One of the most iconic shots in all film history, the DIRECTOR was on the GROUND holding a piece of diffusion paper on a SINGLE LIGHT BULB being used to light JACK NICHOLSON! If that doesn't give you supreme confidence to go out and make movies, then you really never wanted to make them in the first place, just cosplay as a Hollywood director.

@@vaughnmild4467 Hitchcock started doing it because he needed to make crowd scenes more, um, crowded! So, he'd step in front of the camera. Eventually, it turned into an inside joke - until people caught on and started looking for him. After that happened, he made his appearances closer to the begining of his films - to get it out of the way so audiences could concentrate on the film. That's the story he told Francois Truffaut, anyway. 😏 Have a safe, interesting week!

Great compilation. As I uploaded the 2001 Premiere footage (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJWueaivnc2sq68), I was wondering why you left out the (interesting) audio of the interview?

It was not an intentional decision, my crappy editing software cut out the audio for some reason when exporting. Thanks for watching and pointing that out. :)
