All Weather Survival Blanket - Two simple emergency shelters

In this episode we look at a couple of different ways of setting up an all weather blanket (also known as a re-useable space blanket). The two shelter configurations we explore are the basic lean-to and the plough blade shelter. We also look at the quick release knots and hitches to use when setting up these useful shelters as well as where to site them.

This video is presented by Gordon Dedman, founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA). Bushcraft Survival Australia is an outdoor bushcraft survival school dedicated to teaching genuine and authentic modern and traditional outdoor living skills through carefully designed educational courses.
Gordon is a former member of the Australian Army 1st Commando Regiment and is presently a survival instructor in NORFORCE, an Australian Army Reserve Regional Force Surveillance Unit (RFSU). NORFORCE conducts patrols in the remote areas of Northern Australia, working closely with Aboriginal communities.
Gordon is also a Combat Survival SERE instructor (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) and regularly instructs on RAAF Combat Survival Training School Courses in North Queensland.
Gordon has trained at and completed numerous Survival and Bushcraft courses and certifications worldwide at schools run by Paul Kirtley, Ray Mears, Dave Canterbury, Lofty Wiseman and Bob Cooper. Gordon also works seasonally as an outdoor guide in the NT, taking clients on camping expeditions into Kakadu and Arnhemland.
Bushcraft Survival Australia founder and senior instructor Gordon Dedman is currently the survival / bushcraft consultant for the “Alone Australia” TV series.

I have two I bought over 25 years ago. We also use these in winter, as a thermal barrier between the wall of our canvas tent for cold camping, and it is amazing how much heat retention they provide (shiny side towards the tent wall of course). We also use these on the ground as a ground sheet in cold weather (fall and spring temps in Canada can reach below freezing at night), and it provides added insulation from the ground. Very detailed video Gordon. Thank you. I use the cowboy hitch (also called the Falconer's hitch) instead of the Siberian, which is a slight variation of that hitch.

Thanks for the feedback, they are a good piece of kit, especially when used with a fire. On their own they are not insulating though, you need to put an insulating layer above or below it for it to work better. Thanks again for watching.

Never leave home without one. Have reinforced the grommets and edges with 2 inch gorilla tape as advised by Dave Canterbury.

How do you deal with snakes bothering you at night? It seems Australia has a good number of deadly snakes.

It's not as bad as the media makes out. I've never had a problem. All the dangerously venomous snakes are diurnal so you you are up and about. Pythons aren't an issue. Leeches and ticks are more of worry. Clearing the ground and a fire sorts a lot of these issues out.

A Lean-To is useless in wet windy conditions, a Plough Point is better by far ! An Emergency Shelter should take 60 seconds to erect, knots, hitches and or adjustable ridgelines etc are not required! Tarp or Poncho, 3 pegs and a Bungee equals instant shelter!

Yes of course you could use bungees, or the rapid ridge line as I often do in the military. There are many variations. This video was to show different configurations not a timed test to put it up as fast as you can. Once you learn these hitches and knots (there are plenty more you could choose) you can put the shelter up plenty quick enough. You are also learning how to do it with cordage as you may not have bungees. You use what you have. You could use a Ferro rod or a lighter to light a fire, in an emergency you would use the lighter but you wouldn't only train with that and nothing else! I've never had an issue. The hype of Australian snakes is so overly exaggerated. Everything in Australia is not out to get you, it's just lack,of education and awareness. The more you know the less you have to fear. Statistically, the risk of having a car accident is 1000 times more likely and far more dangerous yet we take that risk every day without thinking about it. Thanks for sharing.
