I started recording with a Zoom digital recorder , an AT4040, an AKG C200, a pair of Sony MDR-7506 and a Presonus BlueTube 2 channel preamp and the matching compressor. I had no idea what I was doing and this was 2002, so there were no internet videos to help me learn. I was 30 and had been recording for a while. I did have the advantage of working win some of the best studios in NYC and working with some really good musicians and engineers. I had just left my job (and paid for the gear with my severance pay) and I started writing songs almost every day in the morning and playing Tiger Woods golf on the every afternoon. I wrote 35 or so songs in those 6 months. The band I was in was starting to falter after our second record was released at the same time as 9/11, so I was writing stuff I envisioned as my first solo record. I was lucky enough to know the guys from Wilco at the time and went out to record some of the songs with Jay Bennett, who had been the de facto producer of some of Wilco's early records, as well as the multi-instrumentalist. I spent a week in his studio and we put together the record, pretty much just the two of us. I learned early on not to be precious about the gear, even if you have nice gear. Everything is a tool. Over the years I’ve had a full studio and recorded other bands and I’ve had very stripped-down set ups. The biggest pitfall is turning into a gear collector and not a musician, which tends to happen to guys my age. I’ve tried to put a moratorium on buying stuff and concentrating on just making music. It’s harder than it seems like it should be.

Love it! Great video, and your teaching style is among the best i've seen on KZbin. Very practical and easy to understand! Thanks so much

Ive been messing around with producing my own demos for a couple of years, and oddly enough just last week I got the idea to record a couple Tom Petty songs. It almost instantly helped me with production. It also helped me with song writing ideas. It's sort of a challenge when I just have a scratch guitar demo to feel out a whole band. But recording a song I'm already familiar with helped me see how parts mesh together better. it's the most fun I've had recording in years.

Great video Trev! Thanks for sharing your setup. I also use the AT-2020 and love it. I started on Cakewalk on a home built PC way back in the 90s. So glad we have Macs, Logic and sample libraries now!

I noticed you switch between ezdrummer and logic drums, which do you prefer more? I am trying to decide if I should get ezdrummer for Black Friday prices or just stay with logic drums! Love your vids man!
@TrevBarnes

I prefer EZDrummer. I like having more autonomy of my sounds, and I think that the quality of sounds is much better in EZDrummer as well. There’s great case scenarios for both, but if I had to pick one it would be EZDrummer

I'm currently using Cubase Elements, the cheap version. Does what I need it to do. I would love to use Logic but I just don't Apple. Kissed bye bye to Apple phones 5 years ago and haven't looked back. I wish they'd just sell Logic for Windows. I'd be happy to invest in that. Just don't want to be forced to buy a product just for the software I'd like

What mic do you use for recording acoustic guitars? I’ve got the AT2020 usb mic I use currently, but was thinking of getting an SM57
@TrevBarnes
@TrevBarnes Ай бұрын
I switch back and forth between the AT2020 and the Beta 57A. Depends on the vibe I'm going for. The AT2020 is great for overall acoustic guitar production, but I love using the Beta 57A for getting very warm, almost tape-like acoustics
@Svett357
@Svett357 Ай бұрын
i’d say use your AT2020 i bought a sm57 to record finger picking and it’s not particularly the right tool for the job. you’ll need more gain from your interface to power it and you’ll be more likely to enduce noise floor
