Just found out your channel and I'm eager to see more of your videos. This one got me curious, why did you painted the eyes and the nose so in detail, before even drawing the mouth line? It's just that I usually do a more elaborate underpainting and it kind of feels stupid when I watch you paint without it, so I'm trying to incorporate new things into my process. Thanks for sharing your experience, lots to learn here!

Excellent work Alex. I'm interested to know about the very wet wash applied on both sides at about 3m 28s. Was that done to produce a certain effect, or just to provide a wet surface for subsequent strokes? It looked like the medium/solvent affected some of the previous strokes, though it all happened a bit quick! Also, it looks like you use a big brush for blending/softening edges - is that right? Anyway, thanks for posting.

Thanks. The wash I put down was a general tone for her hair. A single colour for the whole hair mass, trying to match the darks. I generally create soft edges by painting things into each other or mixing the intervening values. The type of brush and how it is handled effects the quality of the edge. I often use a large soft filbert, like badger hair or synthetic.

Thanks. This was one of my very first videos. Really. it was just a test to figure out how to film a painting. I shot this is an art group (which was a mistake) since then I shoot everything in my studio. Also, all my more recent videos have commentaries. Have you seen any of them?

My full palette is Titanium White, Lemon yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Oxide Red, Raw Umber, Terre Vert, Viridian, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Ivory Black. I can use this palette for all subjects including landscapes. For this actual painting it looks as tho I used mainly Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Alizarin, Ultramarine and maybe some Ivory black.
