Maybe he was disabled? Maybe he couldn't provide I-9 verification? I mean have you gotten a job recently? The amount of shit you need is unreal. Not to mention I usually don't see cash for about a month after starting. Your first check is always way late. If he's spending most of his day trying to find food but immediately has to spend all his time doing chores for someone now how's he going to feed himself for the first month without having time to go out and find food. I was only saved when I was homeless due to a friend of mine that gave me a basement to stay in and food to eat until I could provide for myself. No I'm not some drug addict or criminal. Being poor is a lack of cash not a lack of character. I think a lot of people forget that. A homeless person with no outside help is almost certainly going to fail. They have everything stacked against them for the crime of daring to be poor. Not that they could help it, or they wouldn't be homeless.

In my personal experience with every panhandler in my town in my life, and I'm almost 50, and it's every single red light in the city, both directions, sometimes in teams.... no matter what their homemade sign says, they only want money, they've never cared when I mention my company or any other company is hiring, they will ask for money all day everyday while literally standing next to "Now Hiring" signs. Now either way I feel bad for these people, because even if they make more money than I do at my job by begging, I figure that is still a sign as to how mentally ill they are and I have a better life even if they have more money in their pocket from begging than I do from working. But I would rather them quit lying. Draw a sign that says too lazy to work or begging pays better than your job.... I can deal with that, it's the lying.

For those of you who are completely oblivious. A huge percentage of houseless people are severely mentally ill and/or don’t have paperwork. Also drug abuse is a clear sign of guess what Mental Illness. It’s a health issue not something to make fun of or shame folx for. Some of y’all are VERY detached from reality. I was homeless and I’ve seen all of this up close. It’s not something easy to minimize. Also I’ve personally experienced the abuse that folx do when “offering jobs” while I do think this guy is legit… A lot of folx are nuts and target houseless people. And it’s traumatizing. Also malnourishment makes mental illness way worse. I’m glad you treated him like a human no matter what his response was. The fact that he declined an instant job says it all: peddling gets more money. There was a professor who did a study on this, and went totally homeless for a year, cataloguing her exploits and interviews and interactions with other homeless. She proved the point that they were freeloaders in every sense of the world, and that most used the money peddled on drugs - not food, water, clothes -- drugs. At the end of her study, she concluded that giving to anyone peddling, homeless, etc was a complete waste. She argues better to offer them jobs, and see. The true ones will take it. The leeches to society will refuse it.
