Allan Grice's 1986 Bathurst top 10 shootout lap for the great race. Allan was tipped to be the favourite to take pole going into the shootout but still achieved a front row start which as history showed, paid off the on race day.

the wisps of smoke were caused by a sidewall bulge when loaded and rubbing on the guards. Grice got into an arguement with the stewards over this, when the officials measured his tyres with a precut caliper, they were found to be too wide because the caliper would not go past the bulge. Grice insisted that the bulge was only due to the weight of the car, and insisted the tyres be measured with no weight on the car, the officials initially refused but when they looked into the rule book they found Grice was correct and hence the tyres were found to be legal because the bulge was not present with no weight on the tyres. Meanwhile, the officials had also ruled the tyres on the starion were also illegal because of the same issue, sadly for the Mitsubishi team they had already run their top ten shootout, on smaller width tyres

There is also a little known fact about Gricey's tyres from 1986. His fastest Friday qualifying time of 2.16.16 was actually set on Dunlop rubber. But he was contracted to Yokohama so when the TV cameras were rolling during Hardies Heroes and the race, that was what he had to use. The softer Yokohama race / qualifying rubber was known to be slightly slower than the Dunlop's, but they were a bit more durable. As for the Mitsubishi, the report from Ch.7 during the shootout was that Brad Jones experienced engine trouble, which was incorrect. Jones slowed the Starion up top because on the tyres they were forced to run due to the measuring error, the car was wandering about too much for comfort and young Bradley didn't want to put it into the wall, so he aborted the lap.
