This maybe the closest Allan got to the sound of the shoegaze bands of the era like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, but with so much more. They ought to sell Secrets in a package with Isn't Anything. I can't listen to this in public without choking up. Never forget that 1:28 until the next vocal section is just TWO tracks of Allan playing off of himself (one midi-guitar layer and one electric solo layer). 2:34 onward is like the exact vibe dudes like Brian Eno and Kevin Shields were going for, but coming from a completely different background. If you try to play the midi-guitar part, it's all cross-fret chords (like keeping the 12th fret barred behind all of the other fretted notes, but with the 13th fret as the lowest note), it's a good example of how he could play the same exotic chord voicings that indie guys would use alternate tunings to hit. I know Allan said that he sat on this one for a few years, and he originally wanted to do the vocals but had blown out his voice from smoking by the time this version was recorded. You can hear the singer kind of working inside of Allan's old range/inflection from when he used to sing with prog bands. Secrets was the high watermark of Allan's singer/songwriter material, in addition to many other things. These tracks sound like Jeff Buckley being backed by MBV. God Bless Playboi Carti for bringing this song to the masses, and for fulfilling Allan's last musical wish (he approved the sample before he died).

how did he create that synth
@NeilRaouf5 жыл бұрын
Basically by triggering the MIDI with his guitar or the Synthaxe. Synthaxe being a truely innnovative MIDI-Controller for guitarist back in the days.

Has to do more with the feel and the chords themselves than just the synth preset imo, try to figure out what he’s doing and then have a great time.

@@gitcat8160 Allan was a master at chordal harmony - so a lot of the chords he's playing here is more like Debussy than something "guitar-like".
@ItzDanielSoftware4 жыл бұрын
aliensporebomb exactly, the synth preset is nothing special without this style of chordal harmony.

@@gitcat8160 this is quartal harmony, so things are built on 4ths rather than 3rds, you can hear the same type of sound in the second movement of Bartok's piano concerto 2.
