Allan Kaprow's How to Make a Happening was released as a LP album in 1966 by Mass Art Inc.
(- The album has a silkscreened cover with a photo from Allan Kaprow's happening "Household", Cornell University, 1964).
-----------------
The text below is taken from the liner notes:
"In 1957 Alan Kaprow decided to try out the possibility that the "action" of Action Painting was a ritual act of creation, not just an incidental frenzy of movement that produced white canvases. That decision effectively ended his growing career as a painter. Since then he has given to the world a word: the Happening. From Murray the K's Radio program to the Revlon commercials, to peace marches and sit-ins, to the campaigns of politicians - that word seems to have satisfied a need to evoke the zest, freakishness and game of the life around us. Kaprow himself finds the Cape Kennedy rocket launchings among the most powerful quasi-Happenings. And one embittered cynic recently compared the war in Viet Nam to a "Happening gone out of control"

Voice: Allan Kaprow
Cover: Mass Art

I remember my teachers explaining the difference between a happening and performance. Explaining how happenings are not to be planned but surge on their own; We were in an outdoors class and it started to rain, causing us all to run indoors. They laughed and said the weather gave us an example of a happening.

Kaprow's Happenings were actually planned though. The actions were pre-written and painfully organized in an order, divvied out to participants in advance. How those actions were enacted by the participants was unplanned though. Things just "happening" wasn't what Kaprow tried to make in his "Happenings". Your story's awesome though.

This recording captures the radically of art in the 60s. In comparison, much of the contemporary art world has slipped into some kind of a retrogressive coma.

A modern happening would be people fighting over toilet paper due to Corona virus scare. It happens in Australia. People are just scared - but I can not say this is art.

Alan was my professor when I was an undergrad. Although you would not know it from this clip, he had a deep appreciation of painting and the history of painting; he started as a painter. The video experiments he was doing at the time were unique and fascinating, as this old reading suggests. Thanks, Alan!

the problem with contemporary art is you can just stack 2000 cans of tuna and put a stuffed fish on top of it and get an art museum to pay $30,000 for it. Literally any half-baked idea is important because it "disrupts the museum space". How about putting good art in the museum space?
