The British perhaps didn't make the world's most powerful locomotives. But they sure as hell made the best looking ones
@allan59197 жыл бұрын
I tend to agree. Some thing good looking about British steam that our foreign neighbours do not have :-) Thank you for watching - Allan.

We don't really care about power to weight ratio in steam traction, that's why we invented it for the bigger countries to exploit. We are only a very small Country....Oh sorry, I forgot The Mallard holds the world steam speed record at 126 mph, but that isn't really power is it, because it's not a big loco.

Don't tell me your American... if you are don't boast about your heavy goods trains!
@GrrMeister6 жыл бұрын
I have heard a rumor that Tornado being built to modern day standards would be capable of exceeding Mallards record 126mph ? It has achieved 100mph relatively easily, so love to see it.
@theant98216 жыл бұрын
Grahame .White the Scotsman achieved 100 before it was even updated in period, i can't see tornado being capable because of aerodynamics, that was what made an a4 superior to an a3.
@piggynice-064 жыл бұрын
This is a masterpiece. Thank you for filming this. PS to those who think this is Gordon, you’re not correct. Gordon is based of a Gresley A1 prototype, but no evidence suggests that it existed. He’s not even an A3!
@allan59194 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your comments, Much appreciated. Regards - Allan.
@DoncasterResonance3 жыл бұрын
Actually Gordon is based on the 1920 plans of the GNR A1s which the plans existed and A1s and A3s are basically the same thing except the A3s have high pressure boiler and the banjo dome and some double chimney
@juxtaposedlime27343 жыл бұрын
So an A2? gotcha. Kidding!
@ignfarmer87692 жыл бұрын
I believe that the big city engine was based of a peppercorn A1 which appeared in one of the books at some point.
@CassandraPantaristi2 жыл бұрын
Gordon is based on the Gresley A1, Tornado is a Peppercorn A1. Gordon and Tornado would technically be siblings, along with Flying Scotsman. Scotsman was an A1 but modified into an A3.

I could not agree with you more Ant. British Engineering was the best and still is. 'Tornado' is a great example of what still can be achieved. Thanks for watching the video. Regards - Allan.

True, but there are many reasons they have pretty much stopped making trains, because so many foreign countries make trains for the UK now and the UK have so many other things to think about which are much more important and require that money they would use to make trains.
@theant98215 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrickGuy7939 sending money abroad even if their trains are cheaper is still false economy, at the end of the day the poor got richer, so the rich got poorer, thus making everyone poorer. How great Britain was colapsed as an industrial superpower, commoners wanted more than their country country afford to give them, with poor common people great Britain was the richest country in the world, demanding to much from their employers they shot themselves, their employers and future generations in the back. The richer the rich are the richer everyone is. The mistake of comparing our poor selves to the rich. Look how china is growing, because the rich are the richer every day, not the poor in the same rate. They want an empire like we once had, and are inspired by what we did to build it. Sadly short sighted buisiness around the world are fuelling them.

something about British steam draws me back to trains every time. though america has some pretty trains an example being sp 4449 daylight, and another being Norfolk and western 611 (only two I could think of) which are both powerful and beautiful, British steam just has something that american steam just cant match up to.

I'm not a great fan of this livery, which is LNER apple green but with "British Railways" on the tender. I think this engine would look best in BR Brunswick Green with the later version of the BR emblem on the tender.
