There are many metaphors in this film. The name Suryani, Surya means light. The movie title in Indonesian is 'Penyalin Cahaya' which means the copy of light. Their theater team is 'Matahari' which means sun. And the song sung is 'Di Timur Matahari' (East of the sun/sunrise). The symbols of the light of truth that Sur tries to uncover, but are covered in a 'draining, closing, burying' haze. Drain what is valuable from the victim, seal the truth, and bury the case. The dark atmosphere of the film seems to illustrate the difficulty of finding the light of truth. The story of Medusa, in mythology was originally a beautiful goddess who was raped by Poseidon, but instead was cursed by Athena, like Sur who was the victim, but was instead forced to make an apology video. The storyline of this film is slow. It can be boring. But there is no scene is wasted. My favorite scene is when Sur and her mother are on a motorbike. Sur's mom attitude really brought tears. The rest is anger at the perpetrators and empathy for the victims.

I watched this movie as a passing interest before bed and was EXTREMELY surprised that this movie kept me completely engaged until the end! I was also extremely interested in the social politics and the culture of Indonesia in comparison to the U.S. I understand that it's a movie and that certain aspects of their culture may be dramatized, but it was still very interesting. I loved it!

Agreed, definitely Netflix's best movie of the year so far!

Yes it was dramatized to some degree yet doesn't lack any relevances

It's pretty much accurate. From the father who doesn't let the kid go out in a not even revealing clothes, to the board who only thinks about the university, to the authority leaking the information that can be charged against the victim, to our law (supposedly to defend one's good name) that people can use to sue anyone for saying anything on the media. It's not a very safe space for sexual abuse victims.

MY GOD. This movie blew my wig away. It may be super slow-paced, but it’s still definitely worth the watch! The overall message is very, very meaningful and emotionally impactful. I’m still mad at that one guy who started it all. I’m beyond elated that so many victims finally, FINALLY came forward. The douchebag is going down. I’m also glad that the friend beat the dude to pulp. He deserves it. Sike.

This one doesn't just talk to the dangers of having a drink or too much or spiked etc, but how not really knowing members of your team CAN get you into hot water. Back in the mid 80s, I started a job in a place where they had people who thought nothing of initiation by spiked drinks, and I am VERY lucky I was too square to take part. I used to think my nature prevented me from "enjoying myself" but it saved me from the worst. Oh, and I did honestly think, when I first started watching, LOL, that it would be about a supernatural photocopier.

‚Penyalin Cahaya‘, the original title of this film, has more deeper meanings than ‚Photocopier‘. I think ‚Penyalin Cahaya‘ further symbolizes 2 things. 1) when you took picture, you literally ‚copy‘ or ‚capture‘ light 2) It may refer to a figure of women emancipation from 19th Century Indonesia, R.A. Kartini. She was famous for her book (more like compilation of her letters): „Door Duisternis tot Licht“ or „Out of Dark Comes Light“ or „Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang“. Funfact, a literal translation for the title of her book supposed to be „(Struggle) Through Dark to Reach Light“ or „Mengarungi Gelap Demi Mentjapai Terang“ (Source from Joss Wibisono)

I was mad because I waited for them to get the justice they deserved but it was just a mere punch.

Actually that's a really good ending. Because that's what happen in real life. Not everyone can got their justice for what happened to them especially for a victim of SA.

Thanks for your great review! I enjoyed it but struggled with milder nature of the abuse when compared with what happens in western films. Why would anyone do all of this for some pictures?? I guess it’s the drive for power over other people and as you said the message is to never stop speaking your truth and support others to do the same.
@BlaineAuld3 жыл бұрын
Power definitely had something to do with it, just from seeing the wealth and influence the culprit's family had over everything. I think the movie was more about Sur's frustration with trying to uncover the truth, as opposed to the abuse itself, though it definitely is something that should never happen to anyone in any case. Glad you enjoyed the review, thanks for commenting! 😄

It also correlates with our artist culture, how one could justify anything one does in the name of art. Rather than the severity of the abuse, it's more about the power dynamic, how this kind of thing could happen, the pictures is one example, but the dynamic could definitely lead to a more violent abuse as well.
