‘Allein! Weh, ganz allein’ (Elektra) Christine Goerke, Soprano

I’ve seen Goerke quite a few times over the years. It’s a voice you have to experience in a large theater; she makes it sound easy. I saw her decades ago in her Gluck/Mozart/Handel days, and now as Elektra, Barak’s Wife, and Brunnhilde. All extraordinary.

She has an unusual voice. At first it seemed too small or perhaps not warmed up and ready for Strauss. However about two minutes in it seemed to suddenly open into what Strauss needs for this incredibly difficult role. I would love to hear her in person as large voices are not always well served by recording.

To be honest, very few voices sound the same on KZbin as they do in the theater. I’ve seen all the great names over the years, and they almost always sound better in a hall where the voice can unfurl.

Tongue tension and it sounds as though she's darkening her voice artificially here and for a Soprano her top notes well...........I know that she's studied and worked hard. Her middle voice is pleasing and powerful but the top is shrill.

Better than half a step over or under on the top, like literally over dramatic sop. Let's face it, dramatic rep is almost impossible. You have to be an amazon woman. It really comes down to who sounds the most bearable singing it. And I'd rather this than Birgit Nilsson any day.

@@winterraisa7462 8 years on and she's still singing, even bigger and longer repertoire. Think what you want of the voice but a poor technique (which is the correct spelling by the way) would not allow someone to sustain that many ensuing years of singing this kind of repertoire.

And who are you to make that pronouncement? What makes your opinion the deciding vote? I don't care for many singers but that doesn't make them overrated or bad, it just means I don't like them. If you don't like her, tell me, why listen to her?

Definitely doesn't suit her. She's not a dramatic soprano. I'm a trained organist and accompanist and I see this all the time. Singers wrecking their voices with the wrong repertoire

8 years later and she's still not only singing, but singing the same repertoire, bigger/longer repertoire and to much acclaim from audiences and critics. Not something one could do with as great frequency or for as long if their voice was, as it was put, being wrecked. Now whether or not the voice appeals to you is a different matter but perhaps one should stick with accompanying rather than comment on vocal technique when, as is readily admitted, it wasn't the area of training.

If she's not a dramatic soprano, then what is she? Spinto? Being an accompanist doesn't mean you can tell the weight of a singer's voice just from a youtube video. Big voices especially do not record well and are far from accurate as to how the singer sounds in person in a concert hall. Ask anyone who has heard Goerke in person....her voice is humongous.
