Customers are always asking us, "What is a good shoe under $100?" The answer? Not many. Shoes under the $100 price tag are generally not made very well. Sure, you can find some here and there, usually on sale or factory seconds, but generally speaking, shoes under $100 are just NOT made well.
Searching through websites such as eBay, or even Shopgoodwill.com, are GREAT places to find used, or even slightly used, shoes that are very well made and much, much cheaper. I can't tell you just how many Allen Edmonds, Ferragamos, Aldens, etc. that I have found on these sites for under $30. Even at that price, you still have money to refurbish them and still come out right at $100. Case in point, it's smarter to buy a lightly used high-quality shoe for $100 than it is to spend that same money on a cheaply made shoe for the same price. You'll have the high-quality shoes for much, much longer!
Want to have your shoes refurbished? Looking for the BEST shoe creams, soaps, waxes, brushes, shoe trees...and much more? Find it all here:

More than just tears and gouges on the upper, you also have to look out for surface peeling of the lacquer used on corrected grain shoes - even some AE shoes use corrected grain leather. When it's a hi-shine finish almost always a plasticy lacquer has been applied to the surface. Over time this cracks and then begins to peel away. Shoe polish won't fix this. To a lesser extent this also applies to shoes embossed with a pattern, such as scotch grain. Damage to the embossing, such as scuffs, can't be repaired or polished out. Scuffs on full grain calf skin that hasn't been embossed will polish right out, generally.

@TrentonHeath 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kslater23 Good question. Most sellers will state the condition along with pictures from multiple angles. If you have questions or concerns about the condition, just ask the seller. Obviously, buying second hand has its risks, but it also has its rewards. As far as the lining and uppers, we're just wanting to know if there are holes or rips. Another question, I'd ask if not stated is how old and how often were they worn.

Ok, I have to ask - when something in the shop needs repair, the household stitcher, for example, who do you call? That machine looks like it is at least 50 years old (meant as a compliment, by the way) and finding someone who can work with such machinery must be difficult.
@TrentonHeath
@TrentonHeath 5 жыл бұрын
Scott Black Cycles Great question! Yes, most of these machines are quite old. There are still folks out there that work on them, but it usually requires us shipping the machine to them or paying for them to come here to repair. Quite pricey either way. The good news is that they are engineered VERY well and very very rarely ever break down. We’ve learned to do most repairs on them ourselves.

MySecretMachine Believe it or not, there aren’t many companies making shoe repair machines any longer. You’ll find high tech, expensive machines in shoe factories, but for the small cobbler shops, they just aren’t making many. That’s why most of us are still using old machines. Plus, the old machinery is very reliable.

Any great shoes for women? I love the idea of leather soles. But women’s shoes are all about fashion, less about the Goodyear welt or the good polish process. I tried on a pair of leather-bottom Italian ballet flats in store once; I would’ve preferred laces or a way to get a better fit.

I used to wear Lloyd, or Boss Oxford style brogue shoes, but since the past 15-20 years, mostly only sneakers, also from the same brands, and others. I'm usually being a bargain hunter, and always buy shoes at winter or summer season end, therefore, i can save up to 50% of the original price, which is a good thing. Back into the 80s, even 90s, we've had a good shoemaker, whereas my father was going there, for soles renewval of his shoes, and mine, too. Nowadays, it's all about being "cost effective", cheap production plants into 3rd world countries, and also into asian countries....and the same kind of quality like some 30-40+ years ago will cost you nowadays about 5 to 10-times more...sad, but true.

Since I live north of the USA Canada border shipping shoes to the USA is frowned on by border security. I have watched a number of you videos on resolving shoes and boots. Two years ago I found an award winning cobbler locally and took him a pair Alden 40? For a resole. Then I asked if I could replace the soles with Black Crisp Soles under a new Vegatan mid sole. Well I got a look like I was out of my mind. Tried to scare me with a $200 quoat. The he did them for me. Best decision I ever made. Since then I have taken a few other boots and shoes for Re soling. Last spring he Re did two pairs of hood shoes for me a pair in black and a pair in brown. The black got the black crisp soles and the brown got the curved button walking soles. The black are for church, weddings and funerals ie good shoes. The brown are my got to town shoes you know for patios groceries etc. well I got spotted in my brown shoes by one of the counter ladies in the drug store. I explained about the shoes to her and her uncle who is a 75yaer old veteran. He tried on my shoes liked them and decided to have two pair of his old shoes modified. His friends at the local legion notice he was walking easier so they had old black shoes modified as well. Today Nov 11th I watched as about twenty member of the veterans marching in the parade had modified foot wear. They notice me as well and after ward thanked me for my suggestion as they thought last year was the last year they would walk in the parade. Also learned most not all had brown shoes modified for everyday use. Most of their wives had new walking shoes more sport shoe and were getting around a lot better. When they asked how I knew that their old comfy shoes could be resoled I mentioned watching shoe repair videos on KZbin. You videos were on the list. I did tell them that the walking shoe sole was my idea. I was willing to try an experiment with my service boots first then my brown shoes. At the service today was my “friend” the cobbler. He had come over to see how his work was being received. He did warn me that his usual 7 to 10 day turn around was now a month due to new volume of customers. Turns out the veterans from one legion have been talking the veterans at a few of the other legions and with their friends at the lawn bowling clubs.

As mentioned in another one of your videos, you reuse the holes in the welt when sewing the new sole to the shoe. How do you know when starting the sewing from the bottom where the holes are? I'm assuming that you push an awl through a hole so you have a starting point, but figured I would ask. Also, what edge dressing do you recommend? I have a pair of Walnut Strand's that could use a touch-up. Thank and keep up the great videos!
@TrentonHeath
@TrentonHeath 5 жыл бұрын
Jared Ward We adjust the machine beforehand so that the stitch width is the same as original and pre-punch a hole that we use as the starting point (sort of like what you mentioned with the awl). We use Angelus and Fiebings when staining leathers after a repair, but when it comes to the upkeep of soles on a pair we’re polishing, we don’t like using edge dressing. I know a lot of “shoe shine guys” use it, but we don’t. Using a shoe cream around the edges of your soles/heels, we feel, does a much better job. Also, it comes in a lot more colors than edge dressings. Again, this is just our opinions.

My father had to have it often fixed, probably because (1) he never bothered to put the groove around the soles prior to stitching and (2l never plucked out the old stiches, especially when some shoes were resolved multiple times. justin king Completely honest answer...YES. We’re fans of BS and what they’re offering folks at the $200 price point. We both have some ourselves. Long term though, I would tell folks to invest in a good pair of Goodyear welted shoes. Allen Edmonds, despite some of the negativity, continues to make great shoes. The uppers are much higher quality than BS, and unlike with a blake stitched shoe (BS), Goodyear welted shoes can be resoled over and over and over again. Even when the welt blows out, a new one can be put back on. A blake stitched shoe can only be resoled a handful of times at most. I would definitely say to stick with the AE’s as an investment/long term shoe and then add some BS’s next time if you want.

@TrentonHeath
@TrentonHeath 5 жыл бұрын
James H I really don’t think you can go wrong with either. Vibram is a great brand as well, and we resole a lot of shoes/boots with Vibram. Dainite soles will generally last longer than any of the Vibram crepe soles, so if you want longevity, make sure to go with an all rubber Vibram sole. Personally, if I were to resole my pair of Wolverine 1000 Mile boots, which I would compare to most of the Red Wings style wise, I’d probably put Dainite’s on mine due to the low profile look, as well as the longevity. Again, both are great brands.

In surfing KZbin I ran across your video and I was hooked. My late husband was a career Marine and see what you guys do to save a pair shoes is to be saluted. Your tread is a dieing art. Not many people polish shoes today. I grew during a time when everyone in the house took their shoes to the shop. Thank you for your craft.

Keep in mind that when you buy shoes on-line you have no idea about the fit. I’m a Thrift store hound. You can find awesome deals if you know the brand names. I’ll find three, or four, name brand shoes (not my size), and trade them for a great pair of shoes or boots(my size), with my shoe cobbler.

Excellent tip. I've found a few pair of quality shoes at the local thrift stores but almost never in my size. I hadn't ever considered buying them anyway and then trading them toward something else.

If you have already dialed in your fit for a brand, and you know what last the shoe is made on, you’ll be OK. Go to an AE store and get fitted on the last you are considering.

that is why I never buy not even shoes, clothes in general, online. even If I had the measurements of the clothing, and my body's, Stuff just fits differently. I always want to try any type of clothing before purchasing it.

I came across your videos a few days ago and have been binge watching ever since--they have all been fantastic and informative, and this one is no exception! I appreciate you taking the time to share your wisdom and expertise. One quick question: is there anything that can be done to refresh the inside of used shoes?
@TrentonHeath
@TrentonHeath 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them. Unfortunately, the only thing that can be done to refresh the insides of shoes is perhaps new liners. Allen Edmonds doesn’t use liners, but you could always buy some and cut them to size.

TheRafros Thank you! I have found that if the shoes aren’t too old or worn, the inside lining (particularly with higher-end brands which use cork, aren’t affected enough to notice when you wear them.

loved the outcome..... but I wonder about leather soles.....when and where can you wear them? I have a pair of leather Oxford shoes, with newly resoled leather soles ( I just did in the spur of the moment ha ha ) but I am too afraid to take them outside in fear of ruining them.....or slipping on the wet pavement! So when and where to wear ( wow that was a tongue-twister ha ha ) shoes with leather soles?
@Straight2TheHeart
@Straight2TheHeart 4 жыл бұрын
You can wear them everywhere at any time. When worn under wet conditions be sure to apply leather sole oil first. Btw - many people use rubber sole protectors that are applied as long as the sole is relatively new. Maybe that's an option for you, too. They also give you a better grip on a slippery underground. effortlessgent.com/sole-protectors/

You generally don’t want to wear them in wet weather. The soles will scuff your nicely after a short walk on concrete and you won’t need to worry about slipping on concrete.
