William Burroughs always looked like the most uncomfortable person in the room, but he dealt with hostility casually and with indifference. Maybe because he never really let his guard down he was always ready for the worst.

A high school friend of mine pressed into my hands Allen's poetry book "Reality Sandwiches" at age 17, and I knew from then on that the system couldn't rope me in - I love the Beat writers so much, even to this day at age 60. Yet I feel, and that this shouldn't be seen as an insult - that Bill and Allen are acting out their respective roles, Bill the Beckett-like ascetic and Allen the Whitmanic boy-lover - like a loveable Borscht Belt comedy duo telling the same jokes for years over - but I love them both.

"I want to be loved by certain young gentlemen . . ." That's one way of putting it, Allen.

Burroughs fascinated me as he wrote the book "Junkie" and he wrote very savvily about how the best way to get through the worst times of withdrawal and breaking away from addiction was about KEEPING BUSY with hard physical work at the Lexington Narcotics Farm, where all the junkies were once sent. Maybe if they would do that now, my home town of San Francisco would not be in the state it's in. Seriously, we need to make junkies and meth-heads that sleep and crap in the temperate weather of San Francisco and Los Angeles occupied with HARD WORK instead of being regarded as sad useless people who need to be fed drugs because we are too useless. Seriously. White men especially, but descendants of imported African slaves as well, need to have a purpose, and when they freed the slaves they had absolutely no idea what to do with themselves, except for the Republicans who offered them a way to exist and provide for themselves with "40 Acres and a Mule" as Spike Lee is so obsessed with....
