Revolutionary! you might try a smaller point on the steel. I've been using a knife point as a pressure tool for fine work inside the notches, get stalling out much much less.

@000cjr

You should look into ordering some high carbon steel rods they should wear significantly slower than the mild steel you are using. Really cool video
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Жыл бұрын
I've tried the high carbon steel. Even though it doesn't wear down easy, I have to admit that the knapability is better when the steel is softer.
@basketcaseknapperdingusmcg7701
@basketcaseknapperdingusmcg7701 Жыл бұрын
"Grippy" materials grab the edge of the stone better better. Hardened high carbon steel is difficult to work stone with because it is slick and doesn't want to grab

So... Pausing halfway through so maybe you address this and I haven't got there yet but... why do all that filing when you have the smaller one there and a hole already drilled for it? Seems way easier to swap out the tool... Also, only been knapping since July but this changes everything.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Жыл бұрын
The thicker steel is more sturdy than the thinner. The thinner rod tends to vibrate. I already tried it.
@petercoene5930
@petercoene5930 Жыл бұрын
@@KnapperJackCrafty Totally makes sense! Maybe shorten the rod? Would force you to choke up on the log, but would probably vibrate less.

If you move your hands in front of the camera often, turn off the camera's auto focus
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Жыл бұрын
I need the auto focus because I've tried the manual focus, and I have to adjust it dozens of times per video. It's very distracting.
@emstiyeh
@emstiyeh Жыл бұрын
@KnapperJackCrafty if you have a DSLR, you can deepen the focal length (F-stop 8 or higher) so more of the shot is in focus when using manual. Zoom in and manual focus on your subject, then zoom out to the shot you want. Also, you can move the camera away from the subject and crop in to the shot you want using your video editor software (you'll lose some resolution though). Keep up the good work!

After five minutes measuring the angle, and as many measuring the edge width, when you pulled out the scale and weighed the arrowhead... I damn near screamed. But no worries, cool technique.

You can advance the video by draging the little red dot at the bottom of the screen and skip the parts you don't see any knapping.

So frustrating watching you do it backwards. I can see if the rod faced away from you you would be able to see it much better and hold the work more level ;)
