Tolerating trace amounts of allergic foods is not uncommon. At first allergic reactions may be so mild that it is not recognized as a allergen. Headaches, mild stomach distress. Larger volumes of the same allergen can cause severe reactions. Tongue swelling, blood pressure drop, severe diarrhea and eventually death if not eliminated.

It very much depends on how they were tested. Studies show that the correlation between skin-prick testing and allergies is less than 13%, so if they did just that, like they usually do (very superficial cuts on your skin where they put the suspected allergens) then its very possible that they actually were allergic to what they experienced many times before, but with that method of testing it did not show up. And recently we learned that the list of things people are allergic (immediate reaction) or intolerant (reaction can take up to 72 hours usually from foods, mostly 99% plants because of the antinutrients like gluten, phytates, tannins, lectins, oxalates or histamines and so on..) to is much bigger then we thought ...
