No worries…I was actually one of those who collapsed on the hill. I spent the weekend in the hospital…I live here and run those roads every day in this heat (we ran right past my apartment!) and it was a rough day out there!

If the heat and humidity kick in, even a January day in Florida can be tough to run in. To hang on to 6th while suffering through the second half of the race with 6 racers finishing within a minute back of you is an impressive feat.

How bad is the humidity in January? I sign up for a race that in January next year but it's in Lakeland Florida. It a 100 miler so trying to figure out if I should go easy in the middle of the day and go fast early In the morning and at night .
@tak-el-uc

@Dewknow it comes down to luck. You might get a perfect cool running day. Or you might get 80 degree temps with over 50% humidity. Check the weather forecasts in the days before and even the hours before the start and plan accordingly. If you're coming from a cold dry area, be prepared for any heat or humidity to affect you more than you would expect.

This was my second time running the Gate River Run, and I was disappointed I was 2 minutes slower than last year even though I've been more serious in my training. The heat was horrible! They said it was the hottest start time on record for this race. Florida weather is always a surprise. Hopefully you'll be back in the future! I was hoping to be able to say hi. Incredible job pushing through it Allie!!!

Allie, great race, keep in mind as I am sure you already are aware of, all the times were slower than what was expected. You did amazing! 15ks are long! I think feeling bad around 4 miles may have due been a few things: You're used to racing 5ks and shorter, so you may need to adjust your long runs to have workouts in them during a training block for something longer; this sets you up for a race that isn't over shortly after it gets really hard. And then, even though you're racing for under an hour, fueling with plenty of electrolytes in the days before, and perhaps a small carbo-load as well could help. Looking forward to your future races!

I’ve done this race 11 times now and finish in the top %10 but never have I seen so many elite runners laid out along the route. I saw one elite male out around mile 4. The Florida humidity kills the out of towners but this year it was on another level. Last year there were gusts of 50mph recorded on the bridge with 30mph sustained. You never know what you are going to get at this race.

Welcome to Florida, where Summer can happen just about any day of the year. The news said it was one of the hottest Gate River Runs on record, maybe the hottest ever. Pretty sure there was a boatload of racers who thought they'd do better. If it's any consolation, as someone who was born and raised in West Central Florida and has lived here for all of my 70 years, I also ran 20 seconds per mile slower than expected in my 5k Saturday. 🙂 You can see in the race video as the men were coming through, there was a pack of eight girls right on your tail. Without your determination and perseverance, you may have lost all 8 of those positions. Instead you held strong. Job very well done! Just FYI, the morning low in Jax this coming Saturday is forecast to be in the upper 50's.

You did great for a rust buster. I raced in Atlanta the week before, after a red-eye flight from Seattle, and faced 3 difficulties: hills, humidity, and the time change. Of these, I think the jet lag was the biggest factor. That draggy feeling you had after 4 miles was probably in large part attributable to your body feeling like it should still be asleep for a couple more hours. Congrats on a great effort and solid result.

What a great run for your first race over 10Km! I lol at you telling the medical staff "No, I am fine I just need a little nap'. I had a similar experience many years ago at the Silver State marathon. Finished third overall, but looked like a mess (5000' altitude, heat wind, being old, etc.) Medical staff wanted to immediately to hook me up to IVs and stick me in the ambulance. I was like, nope please just give me a few to recover. Can't wait for your next adventure.

Allie I lived in Indiana for 34 years until getting married and moving to FL. (Wife is from central FL) This summer will be 19 years of living here and I still cant stand FL about 8 months out of the year. Humidity drives me crazy and I just so look forward to the few months when it goes away for the most part. FL is an awesome place in the winter. But this year temps have been close to record breaking for Feb and so far March has been pretty hot as well which you unfortunately experienced. So yeah with Alaska as the place you grew up and now living in Seattle I'm just glad you survived the humidity during that race. Had to be really tough. Sounds like you gritted it out like a true pro and held your position well. Great job! So happy for you with the sponsorship and will keep an eye for coming races. Congratulations on sixth - sounded like a really tough race. I live in Scotland and complain about how warm I think it is here when we get our 1 week of summer, you have my respect for running in warm Florida!

Congrats on grinding through the finish. That’s super tough… the bricks feeling happens to me when I overheat and my body can no longer cool itself efficiently enough. Every step starts to feel like a battle of not slowing down or stopping.

You raced well. Yes, it is important to know the course and weather conditions, etc. It says a lot to not get passed. (I have gotta lotta stories...) {The weather has hurt me this year. We have had it 88*F at least and freezing with ice on the ground. And I did too many indoor miles... Today, it's 80*/27* and it's hot enough.}

Congrats! 6th place in US Championship race is a helluva good 'start' point for your first race back in a while! Heat/humidity and bridge climbs are not very compatible with PR/PB's so I'd call that a victory and on to the next! Maybe get a little sign for your kit that tells race officials "I'm okay - I like to take naps right after the finishl line."

Usually we have 40+mph wind gusts up on the bridge.. Think I would take the wind over the heat/high dew point. Its what we run in all spring/summer/fall long though in South GA/North FL. Way to continue to grind for a great finish!
