Thanks, I haven't heard that song in probably 40 years. I seem to recall John Prine singing it long ago, I live in a town that is very Catholic, it was not the favorite song of this town. It might be done better but I don't know how, I believe they knocked it out of the park. The vocals were great and guitars were ringing loud and clear, loved it.

Never heard it before, but instantly thought of Prine. Ol' John would surely approve 😀

Such a fabulous rendition of a super song........only exception might be Paul Newman singin' the same in "Cool Hand Luke " .......so beautiful !!❤

"It might be done better but I don't know how." The guitar arrangement couldn't be any better imo, but there'll always be more versions with different selections of lyrics because there are so many verses no one would want to do all of them in one recording.

OMG it's been decades since I've heard this song! Great cover of the song. You both are too young to remember this, but back then, yes some people used to put plastic versions of Jesus and/or the Virgin Mary on the dashboard of their car!

This was a fantastic rendition. The film "Cool Hand Luke" is a classic for sure, with Paul Newman and George Kennedy. I seem to remember a portion of the lyrics Paul Newman sang in character differing somewhat, like there is a "I can go 90 miles an hour just as long as I've got the Almighty power sittin' on the dashboard of my car. . . " Maybe I'm misremembering too; time to revisit this classic film I guess.

He understands the roots of what makes our American musical hearts beat and is teaching his youthful audience the joy of melody, lyrics and musical expertise that expresses this land that is our land and the poetry of our American souls.

The first time I ever heard this song, I was on a family holiday (vacation) in Stalis Crete. We tried a number of pubs/bars to find one we liked the most - it ended up being an Irish bar called "Sláinte Irish Bar". One night, the entertainment was 2 Irish lads singing and playing acoustic guitars. They were brilliant. Great musicians and seriously funny guys. The version of the song they sang had some... other... verses that you didn't use..! 😅 It's great to be reminded of that Holiday and the good times we had. Thanks for covering this and for that reminder.

"Plastic Jesus" is a true folk song in that it wasn't written by anyone in particular but was passed along mouth to mouth, evolving more verses as it traveled. Near as I recall, folklorists researching the song concluded it was created collectively by the people of Dallas. There are LOTS of verses and I doubt anyone has ever recorded all of them. What stands out to me in this video is the guitar work, for the way it totally fits the song.

As an atheist I find it hilarious that some people have taken it seriously and added religious verses, and others see it how I do, a parody of religion, and have added verses accordingly.

Hi Josh, I live in the east of Scotland. I see you are to perform with Allison in Glasgow (in the west of Scotland) on July 20. Sadly, I have to undergo surgery around that time though I don't have a precise date yet. I also was very remiss in missing your last visit to Scotland. I was told that you, along with your many co-performers appeared in Perth Concert Hall. I never cease to be amazed at your guitar playing and hopefully, I will hear you play live one day. In the meantime, the very best of luck with your upcoming tour.

This is a fascinating song. I don't think any two versions of it are the same. And that's where it gets its power. It is open to customisation by whoever sings it. Just ask yourself this question: why does a song called 'Plastic Jesus' talk about the Virgin Mary?
@SongOfEire3 ай бұрын
Ummmm, why wouldn’t you sing about his mom?
@TheScribeofLight3 ай бұрын
@@SongOfEire I'm not saying it's wrong, just that lyrically it seems strange for a song whose theme is a plastic figure of Jesus on a car dashboard to suddenly change tack to the Virgin Mary. I think it loses focus a bit. If it were me, I'd do an entire alternative version about a figure of the Virgin. 'Rhinestone Madonna'?
